BIS V73 - DESKTOP PUBLISHING WORKSHOP - 1 Unit<br />

Recommended preparation: BIS V70 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 2 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This instructor-led hands-on workshop is an introduction to<br />

desktop publishing. It provides students with a working knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> the current computer s<strong>of</strong>tware and gives participants the skills to<br />

produce quality publications with graphics, such as advertisements,<br />

reports, brochures, and other business documents.<br />

May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2 times. Formerly BIS 73. Offered<br />

BIS V76A - MICROSOFT EXCEL FOR WINDOWS I - 1 Unit<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to the latest version <strong>of</strong> Excel.<br />

Students will learn how to create, edit, and save a worksheet and a<br />

simple chart. Topics covered will include formulas and functions,<br />

formatting techniques, and copying and moving worksheets.<br />

Formerly BIS 76A. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Transfer<br />

credit: CSU; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

BIS V76B - MICROSOFT EXCEL FOR WINDOWS II - 1 Unit<br />

Prerequisite: BIS V76A or extensive experience using Excel and<br />

Windows<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

This is a hands-on course using Excel to create functions, sort<br />

and filter lists, work with advanced charts, and develop multiplesheet<br />

workbooks. Students will analyze financial functions used in<br />

business to create “best-case” scenarios. The course is designed as<br />

an introduction to some <strong>of</strong> the more advanced worksheet capabilities<br />

used by businesses. Projects will be required that will apply the skills<br />

learned in this course.<br />

BIS V77A - INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT<br />

ACCESS I - 1 Unit<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

This is an instructor-led hands-on course introducing the student<br />

to the concepts <strong>of</strong> database management and the use <strong>of</strong> Micros<strong>of</strong>t<br />

Access in an <strong>of</strong>fice environment. Students will create a database file,<br />

manipulate the data, create a customized data-entry form, and learn<br />

how to query the database files, sort and index. Labels and reports<br />

typically used in an <strong>of</strong>fice will also be created.<br />

BIS V77B - INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT<br />

ACCESS II - 1 Unit<br />

Prerequisite: BIS V77A<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

This is an instructor-led hands-on course with advanced<br />

techniques using Access. Topics include enhanced query design,<br />

table design, customized forms, macros, and customized report<br />

design. The emphasis is on the use <strong>of</strong> a database program in an<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice/business environment.<br />

BIS V88 - BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS<br />

WORKSHOPS - .5-16 Units<br />

Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />

required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />

not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

BIS V90 - DIRECTED STUDIES IN BUSINESS INFORMATION<br />

SYSTEMS - 1-6 Units<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers specialized study opportunities for students<br />

who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />

Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />

the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times not to exceed 6 units. Formerly BIS 90. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

BIS V98 - ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT - 16 Units<br />

Hours: 16 lecture weekly<br />

This course provides comprehensive training in the skills<br />

required <strong>of</strong> an administrative assistant including computer hard<br />

disk management, electronic and manual record management,<br />

business s<strong>of</strong>tware with an emphasis on integrating word processing,<br />

electronic spreadsheets, and presentations. Students will learn to use<br />

the Internet to create, organize and process e-mail, share information<br />

and files, and effectively use search engines for e-commerce and<br />

job searches. Topics will include business communication skills,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional telephone techniques, keyboarding and calculating<br />

machines, interviewing techniques, resume preparation, job<br />

searches, and internships.<br />

CHEMISTRY<br />

CHEM V01A - GENERAL CHEMISTRY I - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: CHEM V20-V20L or high school chemistry with grades<br />

<strong>of</strong> C or better; and MATH V03 or MATH V03A-V03E or 1 year <strong>of</strong> high<br />

school intermediate algebra (Algebra II)<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to matter and energy, atomic<br />

structure, nomenclature, chemical equations, stoichiometry, gases,<br />

thermochemistry, quantum chemistry, bonding, molecular geometry,<br />

oxidation-reduction, liquids and solids, and solutions.<br />

Formerly Chem 1A. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

CHEM V01AL - GENERAL CHEMISTRY I<br />

LABORATORY - 2 Units<br />

Prerequisite: CHEM V01A with grade <strong>of</strong> C or better or concurrent<br />

enrollment<br />

Hours: 6 laboratory weekly<br />

The laboratory provides the student with experience in applying<br />

the principles developed in the lecture. Quantitative experiments that<br />

illustrate the fundamental laws <strong>of</strong> chemistry are emphasized.<br />
