HEC V22 - MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
The family and its interpersonal relationships, mate selection,<br />
adjustments within the family, family life cycle, parenthood, marriage<br />
enrichment, and contemporary family issues. Core components:<br />
research and theories related to marriage and the family; sociological<br />
and psychological concepts and terminology; historical development<br />
<strong>of</strong> family; marriage and family in meeting human needs; roles<br />
and expectations in couple relationships; concepts <strong>of</strong> love and<br />
infatuation; dating, courtship, engagement; gender role expectations;<br />
establishing and maintaining intimacy; cohabitation; selection <strong>of</strong><br />
marriage partner; sexuality in couple relationship; reproduction,<br />
birth control and family planning; birthing and parenting; alternative<br />
family structures; communication skills; marriage enrichment and<br />
rebuilding relationships; current family issues; dysfunctional families;<br />
family violence; stress and conflict management; and, terminating<br />
relationships.<br />

HEC V23 - CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course examines the major developmental milestones<br />
<strong>of</strong> children, both typical and atypical, from conception through<br />
adolescence. Physical, psychosocial and cognitive development are<br />
studied with an emphasis on the interactions between maturational<br />
processes and environmental factors including language, culture,<br />
and diversity. Students will observe children, evaluate individual<br />
differences, and analyze characteristics <strong>of</strong> development at various<br />
stages while studying developmental theory and investigative<br />
research methodologies.<br />

HEC V24 - HUMAN DEVELOPMENT - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course integrates the physical, social, psychological,<br />
emotional and cognitive aspects <strong>of</strong> human development throughout<br />
the lifespan. Developmental tasks facing individuals at various points<br />
in the lifespan are examined. The course will also explore the ways<br />
social interaction and cultural institutions shape the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> the individual including relationships and adjustments during the<br />
normal stages <strong>of</strong> family living.<br />

HEC V30 - SPACE PLANNING: INTERIORS - 1.5 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: HEC V05A<br />
Hours: 1.5 lecture weekly<br />
This course is an intensive study in the art <strong>of</strong> placement,<br />
the beginning <strong>of</strong> the design process. Coursework will include<br />
circulation studies, bubble diagrams, focal point identification, axes<br />
identification, zoning adjacencies, scale and proportion, and the<br />
“magic” <strong>of</strong> “power placement” <strong>of</strong> furniture and objects.<br />

HEC V31 - LIGHTING DESIGN - 1.5 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: HEC V05A<br />
Hours: 1.5 lecture weekly<br />
This course covers the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> lighting design for<br />
residential interiors. Students will explore the application <strong>of</strong> lighting<br />
design, including: ambient, accent, and task lighting. The appropriate<br />
usage <strong>of</strong> lighting fixtures and controls, decorative lighting, energy<br />
efficient light sources and building code requirements will be<br />
examined.<br />

HEC V32 - KITCHEN AND BATH DESIGN - 1.5 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: HEC V05A<br />
Hours: 1.5 lecture weekly<br />
This course introduces the pr<strong>of</strong>essional process <strong>of</strong> kitchen and<br />
bath design. Areas <strong>of</strong> study and practice include; the kitchen work<br />
triangle theory, surface materials and application, storage systems,<br />
task lighting, appliance options, cabinetry design and installation,<br />
and innovations in kitchen and bath design and technology.<br />

HEC V88 - HOME ECONOMICS WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />
Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />
Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />
Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />
required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />
not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />
Fees may be required. <strong>Courses</strong> with same title may not be<br />
repeated; may be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly HEC<br />
V89.<br />
HEC V90 - DIRECTED STUDIES IN HOME<br />
ECONOMICS - 1-6 Units<br />
Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />
Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers specialized study opportunities for students<br />
who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />
Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />
the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />
Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times not to exceed 6 units. Formerly HE 90. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />
HEC V95 - HOME ECONOMICS INTERNSHIP I - 1-4 Units<br />
Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />
Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />
in one course in the discipline<br />
Hours: 60 per unit<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are volunteers (unpaid) an<br />
opportunity to obtain work experience in their field <strong>of</strong> study. Students<br />
are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a designated faculty<br />
member in the discipline and the acceptance <strong>of</strong> an approved work<br />
proposal.<br />
Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other work<br />
experience/internship courses. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />
Transfer credit: CSU; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />
HEC V96 - HOME ECONOMICS INTERNSHIP II - 1-4 Units<br />
Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />
Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />
in one course in the discipline<br />
Hours: 75 per unit<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are employed in the field an<br />
opportunity to expand their work experience related to their field<br />
<strong>of</strong> study. Students are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a<br />
designated faculty member in the discipline and acceptance <strong>of</strong> an<br />
approved work proposal.<br />
Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other work<br />
experience/internship courses. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />
