BESL N100A - LOW-BEGINNING COMMUNICATION SKILLS<br />
FOR NON- AND LIMITED-ENGLISH-PROFICIENT STUDENTS<br />
Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />
This is a low-beginning course for non- and limited-Englishpr<strong>of</strong>icient<br />
students who want to acquire the listening and speaking<br />
skills necessary for living, working, and attending school where<br />
English is used. There will be very limited attention to reading and<br />
writing skills at this level.<br />
Field trips may be required. Formerly BAE-ESL 100A.<br />
BESL N100B - HIGH-BEGINNING COMMUNICATION SKILLS<br />
FOR LIMITED-ENGLISH-PROFICIENT STUDENTS<br />
Recommended preparation: BESL N100A or equivalent<br />
Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />
This is a high-beginning course for limited-English-pr<strong>of</strong>icient<br />
students who want to acquire the listening, speaking, reading, and<br />
writing skills necessary for living, working, and attending school<br />
where English is used. There will be some attention to reading and<br />
writing skills at this level, but listening and speaking will have the<br />
major emphasis.<br />
Field trips may be required. Formerly BAE-ESL 100B.<br />
BESL N100C - LOW-INTERMEDIATE COMMUNICATION SKILLS<br />
FOR LIMITED-ENGLISH-PROFICIENT STUDENTS<br />
Recommended preparation: BESL N100B or equivalent<br />
Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />
This is a low-intermediate course for limited-English-pr<strong>of</strong>icient<br />
students who want to develop the listening, speaking, reading, and<br />
writing skills necessary for living, working, and attending school<br />
where English is used. All language skills will be addressed, and<br />
there will be some attention to United States customs and culture.<br />
Field trips may be required. Formerly BAE-ESL 100C.<br />
BESL N100D - HIGH-INTERMEDIATE COMMUNICATION<br />
SKILLS FOR LIMITED-ENGLISH-PROFICIENT STUDENTS<br />
Recommended preparation: BESL N100C or equivalent<br />
Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />
This is a high-intermediate course for limited-English-pr<strong>of</strong>icient<br />
students who want to develop the listening, speaking, reading, and<br />
writing skills necessary for living, working, and attending school<br />
where English is used. Students will develop fluency in all language<br />
skills. Accuracy will be emphasized and there will be some attention<br />
to academic English skills.<br />
Field trips may be required.<br />
NONCREDIT COURSES<br />
The following noncredit courses are <strong>of</strong>fered according to community need. A student enrolls at the first meeting <strong>of</strong> the course. The<br />
course must maintain a minimum weekly attendance <strong>of</strong> fifteen. When a course consistently falls below fifteen, it will be canceled. Not<br />
all courses are <strong>of</strong>fered every semester. Noncredit courses can be <strong>of</strong>fered in a wide variety <strong>of</strong> subject fields. They can be vocational,<br />
cultural, and/or creative in content and purpose. Specific <strong>of</strong>ferings in any semester are listed in the current Schedule <strong>of</strong> Classes.<br />
BUSINESS<br />
BUS N100 - BASIC TRAINING FOR PERSONAL CAREGIVERS<br />
Hours: by arrangement<br />
This course is designed to provide prospective caregivers <strong>of</strong> the<br />
elderly an overview <strong>of</strong> the social, psychological and physical effects<br />
<strong>of</strong> aging within a culturally sensitive context. Students will receive<br />
hands-on training in areas <strong>of</strong> elder care such as feeding, hygiene and<br />
mobility safety. Students successfully completing the course will be<br />
prepared to take entry-level positions as personal care assistants in<br />
private homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes.<br />
Field trips may be required.<br />
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES<br />
IDS N100 - INDIVIDUALIZED STUDY<br />
Corequisite: current enrollment in <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
Hours: 1-10 laboratory weekly<br />
This noncredit course is designed to provide students with support<br />
in basic skills areas such as reading and writing, to include literacy<br />
and general communication skills, and in basic skills areas such<br />
as mathematics and computer literacy, to include numeracy and<br />
computational skills. The course will provide supervised tutoring to<br />
prepare students to improve their performance in college coursework.<br />
Instruction and training will also be provided to assist vocational<br />
students and older students.<br />

WELDING<br />
WEL N94 - WELDING SPECIALTY<br />
Hours: by arrangement<br />
This course is designed to provide practicing welders<br />
opportunities to develop skills in a specialized area <strong>of</strong> the welding<br />
art.<br />
Fees will be required. Field trips may be required. Formerly<br />
Wel 97.<br />
