ESL V04C - HIGH-INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: WRITING AND GRAMMAR - 6 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ESL V03C or equivalent<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course will be on communication and<br />

fluency. The focus will be on the development <strong>of</strong> the English<br />

grammar and writing skills that can be used by a high-intermediate<br />

English language learner at school, work, and in everyday life in<br />

the community. Attention will be given to punctuation, mechanics,<br />

spelling, complex sentence structure, and paragraph formation.<br />

Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree<br />

credit.<br />

ESL V05A - LOW-ADVANCED ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: LISTENING AND SPEAKING - 6 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ESL V04A or equivalent<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course will be on improving conversation<br />

skills, with considerable attention given to self-monitoring for<br />

accuracy and fluency. Students will begin focusing on listening and<br />

speaking skills for success in mainstream college courses.<br />

ESL V05B - LOW-ADVANCED ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: READING AND VOCABULARY - 6 Units<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course will be on understanding meaning<br />

from content and vocabulary development. Students will focus<br />

on using various reading strategies to increase their reading<br />

comprehension.<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course will be on the development <strong>of</strong> writing<br />

and grammar skills accessible to low-advanced English language<br />

learners for academic and vocational purposes as well as for<br />

everyday use. Students will focus on complex sentence structure<br />

and verb tenses and will learn to write unified paragraphs on familiar<br />

topics.<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course is on the practice and improvement<br />

<strong>of</strong> conversation, class discussion, and presentation skills needed<br />

environments. Students will focus on speaking fluently in most<br />

formal and informal conversations.<br />

This course emphasizes the development <strong>of</strong> reading<br />

comprehension and vocabulary skills through the reading <strong>of</strong> short<br />

stories, literature, and other practical materials such as newspaper<br />

or journal articles. Students will apply appropriate reading strategies<br />

to understand content, interpret main ideas, and analyze authors'<br />

various points <strong>of</strong> view.<br />

ESL V06C - HIGH-ADVANCED ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

In this course the emphasis will be on developing the grammar<br />

and writing skills needed for college and the workplace. The highadvanced<br />

English language learner will focus on syntax, mechanics,<br />

usage, sentence types, paragraph development, purpose, and<br />

audience. Attention will be given to the students' written fluency.<br />

credit.<br />

ESL V07A - READING AND WRITING FOR VOCATIONAL<br />

PURPOSES I - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course is on the development <strong>of</strong> reading<br />

and writing skills needed for vocational purposes. It is designed for<br />

advanced English language learners who need to develop the reading<br />

and vocabulary skills necessary to comprehend required textbooks<br />

as well as the writing skills needed for vocational courses. Students<br />

will acquire the study skills needed for success in college.<br />

Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree<br />

credit.<br />

ESL V07B - READING AND WRITING FOR VOCATIONAL<br />

PURPOSES II - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ESL V07A or equivalent<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed for advanced English language learners<br />

who need to further develop their reading and writing skills and<br />

acquire the word study skills necessary to write for vocational<br />

purposes. The focus is on reading vocational materials. Students<br />

will develop critical thinking skills as they learn to make inferences,<br />

prioritize values, and analyze various authors' points <strong>of</strong> view.<br />

Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree<br />

credit.<br />

ESL V08A - WRITING AND GRAMMAR FOR ACADEMIC<br />

PREPARATION I - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed for native and non-native speakers<br />

<strong>of</strong> English who need to increase their competence in writing and<br />

grammar. In preparation for academic courses, students will write<br />

paragraphs, develop their skills in English grammar and usage, and<br />

acquire the study skills needed for success in college.<br />

Field trips may be required. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />

Not applicable for degree credit.<br />

ESL V08B - WRITING AND GRAMMAR FOR ACADEMIC<br />

PREPARATION II - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed for native and non-native speakers <strong>of</strong><br />

English who need to further develop their skills in English grammar<br />

and usage, and acquire the word study skills necessary to write<br />

cohesive paragraphs in preparation for academic courses.<br />
