MUS V31H - PRIVATE LESSONS: VOICE - 3 Units<br />

Corequisite: MUS V02A, V02B, V02C or V02D; MUS V10, V11, V12,<br />

V14A, V14B, V14C, V15, V16, V17, V19, V21A, V21B, V21C, V22A,<br />

V22B, V22C, V34, V35, V43, V44, V45, V46 OR V47; and MUS V30<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to sing<br />

Hours: 1 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

This course includes a private one-hour lesson per week, plus six<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> practice on campus weekly. The student will work on vocal<br />

techniques, style and interpretation, and repertoire.<br />

MUS V34 - SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: MUS V15 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Symphony Orchestra is for experienced orchestral musicians.<br />

The orchestra will concentrate on masterworks from the standard<br />

repertoire from all periods <strong>of</strong> music. The goal is to meet the highest<br />

performance standards. Members will play alongside pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

musicians, who will act as their mentors. Performances may include<br />

strictly orchestra concerts, but also soloists in concertos, chorus<br />

and ballet.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

MUS V35 - CHAMBER ORCHESTRA - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: MUS V15 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Chamber Orchestra explores literature for smaller orchestras<br />

typical <strong>of</strong> the Baroque and Classic periods. In addition, modern<br />

scores by composers such as Stravinsky and Copland will be studied<br />

and performed. Musicians are expected to be pr<strong>of</strong>icient on their<br />

instruments and experienced in ensemble playing. Concerts include<br />

orchestra repertoire, choral/orchestral repertoire, ballet repertoire and<br />

concertos.<br />

MUS V36 - BEGINNING GUITAR - 1.5 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed for the beginning student in guitar and<br />

focuses on the study <strong>of</strong> standard guitar techniques and on the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> musical skills, performance skills and a knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

repertoire.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />

MUS V37 - INTERMEDIATE GUITAR - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: MUS V36<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed for the serious student interested in<br />

building classical repertoire. Focus is on continued improvement <strong>of</strong><br />

basic techniques, development <strong>of</strong> performance skills and individual<br />

problem solving.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />

MUS V39 - INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC TECHNOLOGY - 2 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: music fundamentals and computer<br />

fundamentals<br />

Hours: 4 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to the many uses <strong>of</strong> the computer<br />

in today’s music. Areas covered include: music notation and<br />

printing s<strong>of</strong>tware (Finale and Sibelius); the basics <strong>of</strong> MIDI (Musical<br />

Instrument Digital Interface) and MIDI sequencing; sound synthesis<br />

and sampling; and, digital audio recording, editing, and mixing with<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware such as Pro Tools or Digital Performer. Students will get<br />

hands-on experience through several class projects. An overview <strong>of</strong><br />

the complete spectrum <strong>of</strong> technology in music is included.<br />

MUS V42 - SOUND AND AUDIO FOR MULTIMEDIA - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: MM V10 or equivalent; and computer<br />

fundamentals<br />

Hours: 6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed to build an understanding <strong>of</strong> audio<br />

and soundtrack production for multimedia presentations. Using<br />

computers, audio and MIDI (Musical Instrumental Digital Interface)<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware, musical keyboards and synthesizers, students will explore,<br />

discuss and begin to create audio and music tracks in a series <strong>of</strong><br />

progressive exercises designed to develop aesthetic sensitivity and<br />

basic technical knowledge required to produce new and unique<br />

interactive materials and experiences.<br />

Fees will be required. Field trips may be required. Same as MM<br />

MUS V43 - SYMPHONIC CHOIR - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: MUS V19 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Symphonic Choir is for experienced musicians who would like to<br />

sing the choral-symphonic literature. Repertoire is drawn from all<br />

periods <strong>of</strong> music and will include: musical mass, oratorio, passion,<br />

choral symphony and opera.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V44 - CHAMBER CHOIR - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: MUS V19 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Chamber Choir is designed for experienced singers. Literature is<br />

drawn from all periods <strong>of</strong> music, concentrating on ensembles made<br />

up <strong>of</strong> a smaller number <strong>of</strong> singers. Typical genres include motets,<br />

madrigals, anthems, part songs, folk songs, and character pieces.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V45 - BEGINNING OPERA/MUSICAL THEATRE<br />

WORKSHOP - 1.5 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

An in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the skills necessary for the performer in<br />

a live opera/musical theatre production. Emphasis on the script/<br />

score analysis, role preparation, theatre and rehearsal etiquette and<br />

technique, singing technique, culminating in a live scene or fulllength,<br />

fully produced opera or musical.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly Mus 45. Transfer credit:<br />

CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V46 - INTERMEDIATE OPERA/MUSICAL THEATRE<br />

WORKSHOP - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: MUS V45<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

An in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the skills necessary at the intermediate<br />

level for the performer in a live opera/musical theatre production.<br />

Emphasis on the script/score analysis, role preparation, theatre and<br />

rehearsal etiquette and technique, singing technique, culminating in a<br />

live scene or full-length, fully produced opera or musical.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly Mus 46. Transfer credit:<br />

MUS V47 - ADVANCED OPERA/MUSICAL THEATRE<br />

WORKSHOP - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: MUS V46<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

An in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the skills necessary at the advanced level for<br />

the performer in a live opera/musical theatre production. Emphasis<br />

on the script/score analysis, role preparation, theatre and rehearsal<br />

etiquette and technique, singing technique, culminating in a live<br />

scene or full-length, fully produced opera or musical.<br />
