SPAN V20 - HISPANIC LITERATURE IN<br />
TRANSLATION - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: ENGL V01A<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to introduce the student to important<br />
novels, short stories, drama, poetry and essays from Latin<br />
America translated into English. Special emphasis will be given to<br />
contemporary authors. Discussion will concentrate on developing<br />
an understanding and appreciation for the essential qualities <strong>of</strong><br />
the selected authors and their literary work; the literary trends and<br />
stylistic tendencies reflected in their work; and the manner and extent<br />
to which their literary work reflects the Latin American ethos.<br />

SPAN V51A - SITUATIONAL CONVERSATION IN<br />
SPANISH I - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: SPAN V01 or 2 years <strong>of</strong> high school Spanish or<br />
equivalent<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to give the student with some knowledge<br />
<strong>of</strong> Spanish further opportunity to practice the language through<br />
conversation, discussion groups, role-playing and other activities in<br />
Spanish. The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish.<br />
Field trips may be required. Formerly Span 51A. Transfer credit:<br />

SPAN V51B - SITUATIONAL CONVERSATION IN<br />
SPANISH II - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: SPAN V02 or SPAN V51A or 3 years <strong>of</strong> high school<br />
Spanish or equivalent<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to give the intermediate-level student <strong>of</strong><br />
Spanish additional oral practice in the language through conversation,<br />
discussion groups, role-playing, and other activities in Spanish. The<br />
course will be conducted entirely in Spanish.<br />
Field trips may be required. Formerly Span 51B. Transfer credit:<br />

SPAN V70 - SPANISH FOR MEDICAL PERSONNEL - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> those employed<br />
in the medical field. Students will learn essential vocabulary and<br />
phrases in Spanish that will allow them to communicate with patients<br />
in a variety <strong>of</strong> situations from gathering information to responding<br />
to medical emergencies. Appropriate cultural practices will also be<br />
discussed.<br />

SPAN V72 - SPANISH FOR THE WORKPLACE - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to teach job-related Spanish<br />
communication skills to non-Spanish speakers. The course will focus<br />
on developing work-related vocabulary and communication strategies<br />
to allow the student to communicate on a variety <strong>of</strong> topics with<br />
Spanish-speaking employees, co-workers and customers.<br />
Field trips may be required.<br />
SPAN V75 - SPANISH FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> those employed in<br />
the field <strong>of</strong> law enforcement. Students will learn essential vocabulary<br />
and phrases in Spanish that will allow them to communicate with<br />
the public in a variety <strong>of</strong> situations such as traffic stops, explaining<br />
laws and legal rights, taking reports and responding to emergencies.<br />
Appropriate cultural practices will also be discussed.<br />

SPAN V79 - SPANISH FOR SCHOOL PERSONNEL - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to assist K-12 teachers, para-educators<br />
and <strong>of</strong>fice staff in their efforts to communicate with Spanish<br />
speaking students and their parents. Through classroom activities<br />
such as dialogues and role playing, students will learn appropriate<br />
vocabulary, grammar and communication skills in Spanish that will<br />
improve their ability to interact with Spanish speakers. In addition,<br />
Latino cultural perspectives and attitudes toward education will be<br />
discussed.<br />

SPAN V80 - CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This is an entry-level course in oral communication in Spanish<br />
that develops novice-level pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies in listening comprehension,<br />
oral expression, and vocabulary acquisition. Students imitate native<br />
pronunciation and intonation <strong>of</strong> Spanish words and phrases through<br />
choral repetition, role playing, guided practice, responding in Spanish<br />
to questions and commands, initiating conversations, conducting<br />
interviews in Spanish, and by carrying out other communicative<br />
tasks used to facilitate language acquisition. Students develop<br />
the ability to use Spanish to conduct friendly conversations, gain<br />
information, and to discuss preferences, daily activities, and other<br />
basic conversational topics.<br />
SPAN V88 - SPANISH WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />
Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />
required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />
not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />
Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved<br />
by the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />
