MUS V05 - MUSICIANSHIP - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course bridges the gap between music fundamentals and<br />

music theory. It includes a basic review <strong>of</strong> music reading, scales,<br />

intervals, keys, chords, rhythm and meter. Exercises include work at<br />

the piano, percussion and computer as well as traditional solfeggio<br />

and written exercises.<br />

MUS V06 - HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> rock music from the late 1940’s to the present– it’s<br />

musical, socio-cultural and historical development. Emphasis on the<br />

roots and early development <strong>of</strong> rock; its stylistic trends and influential<br />

artists throughout the years including the politics <strong>of</strong> rock and the<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> technology.<br />

MUS V07 - HISTORY OF JAZZ - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> jazz history, from both a musical and cultural<br />

perspective from its roots in ragtime, blues, and American popular<br />

music, to the diverse styles <strong>of</strong> today. The focus will be on important<br />

individuals, groups, styles, and influences, as well as the impact <strong>of</strong><br />

American society and world culture. Guest artists and lecturers, and<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> recordings may be included.<br />

MUS V08 - MUSIC APPRECIATION - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces the student to the main stylistic periods<br />

and developments in music, from ancient times to the present, with<br />

an emphasis on understanding and enjoyment in listening. It explores<br />

not only the music, composers and traditions <strong>of</strong> Western culture, but<br />

examines some <strong>of</strong> the contributions <strong>of</strong> world music, popular music,<br />

blues, jazz, and rock as well.<br />

MUS V09A - MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE I - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is a survey <strong>of</strong> musical styles, form and personalities<br />

from the Middle Ages (560) to the late Baroque era (1750). There will<br />

also be discussions about social and political influences in each era.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly Mus 9A. Transfer credit:<br />

MUS V09B - MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE II - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is a survey <strong>of</strong> musical styles, form, and personalities<br />

from the early Classical era (1750) to our current era. Discussions<br />

will also include social and political influences from each era.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly Mus 9B. Transfer credit:<br />

MUS V10 - COLLEGE CHORUS - 1.5 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

The study and performance <strong>of</strong> mixed choir music from the<br />

community, classic and folk traditions.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Formerly Mus 10. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V11 - COLLEGE SINGERS - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: MUS V10 or singing ability<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This singing group provides an opportunity to learn choral music<br />

from all ages. <strong>College</strong> Singers appear in public concerts, inter-school<br />

festivals, and workshops. Some additional time is needed for special<br />

concerts and rehearsals.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

MUS V12 - COMMUNITY CHOIR - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: singing ability<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Community Choir is for singers from the college and community<br />

with a desire to learn great choral music and develop their singing<br />

and music reading skills. The ensemble rehearses music to be<br />

performed in public.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Formerly Mus 12. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V13 - VOICE - 1.5 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course provides training in singing both as a soloist and<br />

in a group. Topics covered will include: vocal technique such as<br />

stretching and warm-up exercises, posture, breathing, basic anatomy<br />

and the vocal apparatus, pathway <strong>of</strong> singing, resonance, and vowel<br />

and consonant articulation; repertoire; and, performance techniques.<br />

Students will be required to perform solo and in a group setting.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Formerly MUS V13A. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V14A - BEGINNING ORCHESTRA: STRINGS - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play a string instrument and<br />

ability to read music<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is for string players who wish to experience playing in<br />

a larger ensemble. Rehearsals lead to a public performance, based<br />

upon the skill level <strong>of</strong> the group.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V14B - BEGINNING ORCHESTRA: WINDS - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play a wind instrument and<br />

ability to read music<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is for woodwind and brass players who wish to<br />

experience playing in an orchestra. Rehearsals lead to a public<br />

performance, based upon the skill level <strong>of</strong> the group.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V14C - BEGINNING ORCHESTRA:<br />

PERCUSSION - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play a percussion instrument<br />

and ability to read music<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is for percussion players who wish to experience<br />

playing in an orchestra. Rehearsals lead to a public performance,<br />

based upon the skill level <strong>of</strong> the group.<br />
