POLS V16 - GOVERNMENT AND THE ECONOMY - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ECON V01A and POLS V01<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces the student to major theories explaining<br />

the rationale for government involvement in the economy, as<br />

well as an appraisal <strong>of</strong> these theories. The course begins with an<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> conceptual and historical perspectives <strong>of</strong> government<br />

involvement followed by constitutional, legal, normative, ideological,<br />

and analytical perspectives. Subsequently, the course explores and<br />

evaluates the different approaches through which the government<br />

attempts to affect the economy.<br />

POLS V30 - LECTURES IN INTERNATIONAL AND GLOBAL<br />

STUDIES - .5 Unit<br />

Hours: .5 lecture weekly<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to introduce the student to state<strong>of</strong>-the-art<br />

knowledge in many disciplines related to international and<br />

global studies by attending lectures presented by top level experts on<br />

these subjects.<br />

Formerly POLS V60C. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers specialized study opportunities for students<br />

who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />

Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />

the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times not to exceed 6 units. Formerly PolSci 90. Transfer credit:<br />

POLS V95 - POLITICAL SCIENCE INTERNSHIP I - 1-4 Units<br />

Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />

Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />

in one course in the discipline<br />

Hours: 60 per unit<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are volunteers (unpaid) an<br />

opportunity to obtain work experience in their field <strong>of</strong> study. Students<br />

are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a designated faculty<br />

member in the discipline and the acceptance <strong>of</strong> an approved work<br />

proposal.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other work<br />

experience/internship courses. Formerly PolSci 95. Transfer credit:<br />

for CSU, credit limitations - see counselor; for UC, determined after<br />

admission.<br />

POLS V96 - POLITICAL SCIENCE INTERNSHIP II - 1-4 Units<br />

Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />

Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />

in one course in the discipline<br />

Hours: 75 per unit<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are employed in the field an<br />

opportunity to expand their work experience related to their field<br />

<strong>of</strong> study. Students are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a<br />

designated faculty member in the discipline and the acceptance <strong>of</strong> an<br />

approved work proposal.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other<br />

work experience/internship courses. Transfer credit: for CSU, credit<br />

PSYCHOLOGY<br />

PSY V01 - INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the scientific study <strong>of</strong><br />

psychology in the areas <strong>of</strong> neuroscience, sensation and perception,<br />

states <strong>of</strong> consciousness, learning and memory, intellect and<br />

cognition, language, lifespan development and the influences<br />

<strong>of</strong> heredity and environment on behavior, motivation, sexuality,<br />

emotion, personality, stress and coping, psychological disorders,<br />

psychotherapy, and social relations.<br />

PSY V01SL - INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY: SERVICE<br />

LEARNING - .5 Unit<br />

Corequisite: PSY V01<br />

Hours: .5 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces students to the basic aims and processes<br />

<strong>of</strong> service learning as they relate to applied psychology. Topics<br />

will include the importance <strong>of</strong> community participation, oral and<br />

written communication skills, teamwork, leadership, and diversity<br />

awareness. Emphasis is also placed on critical reflection <strong>of</strong> the role<br />

<strong>of</strong> the student as an active citizen in his or her community.<br />

Field trips will be required. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

PSY V02 - PERSONAL GROWTH AND SOCIAL<br />

AWARENESS - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course provides an introduction to theory, research,<br />

and practical application relevant to personal fulfillment, human<br />

relationships, and social functioning. Topics which will be studied<br />

are personality development; traditional and changing sex roles;<br />

intimate relationships; stress and stress management; personal and<br />

social achievement; and normal and abnormal reactions to modern<br />

society. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing typical patterns<br />

<strong>of</strong> personality development, with some attention given to fostering<br />

self-actualization and social contributions, while preventing deviant<br />

patterns.<br />

PSY V02SL - PERSONAL GROWTH AND SOCIAL AWARENESS:<br />

SERVICE LEARNING - .5 Unit<br />

Corequisite: PSY V02<br />

Hours: .5 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces students to the basic aims and processes<br />

<strong>of</strong> service learning as they relate to personal growth and social<br />

awareness. Topics will include the importance <strong>of</strong> community<br />

participation, oral and written communication skills, teamwork,<br />

leadership, and diversity awareness. Emphasis is also placed on<br />

critical reflection <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the student as an active citizen in his<br />

or her community.<br />
