COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

PHOT V01 - BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This is a fast-paced introductory course in photography that<br />

assumes little or no previous knowledge <strong>of</strong> the camera or the photo<br />

lab. It stresses learning through practical experience. Students will<br />

learn to properly expose, develop and print their own photos, and<br />

they will learn the artistic merit <strong>of</strong> photography.<br />

Fees will be required. Field trips may be required. May be taken for<br />

a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2 times. Formerly Photo 1. Transfer credit: CSU; UC;<br />

credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

PHOT V02 - BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY WITH DIGITAL<br />

TECHNIQUES - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course provides a fast-paced introduction to photography,<br />

using 35mm analog or digital cameras. No prior knowledge <strong>of</strong> the<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> the camera, computer, or support systems operation<br />

is required. Topics include: operation <strong>of</strong> the camera; artistic<br />

compositions; computer operation; scanning techniques; file<br />

compression and formatting; use <strong>of</strong> related s<strong>of</strong>tware (i.e. Adobe<br />

Photoshop); and printing techniques. New innovations in photography<br />

and digital technology will be presented as they are developed.<br />

PHOT V03 - INTRODUCTION TO 35MM SLIDE<br />

PHOTOGRAPHY - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This introductory photography course is a critique <strong>of</strong> student<br />

projects; no darkroom techniques are required. The course is<br />

designed to provide basic instruction in the proper operation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

35mm SLR camera with manual and/or automatic functions, camera<br />

accessories, proper exposure <strong>of</strong> color transparency (slide) film, color<br />

theory and proper camera care. Projects are designed to familiarize<br />

the students with camera techniques and artistic composition<br />

that will enhance their ability to create good and/or outstanding<br />

photographs under various environmental conditions. This course will<br />

also introduce students to some photographers and their work that<br />

have been a major influence on artistic and societal issues.<br />

PHOT V04A - INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY I - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: PHOT V01 or equivalent<br />

Hours: 6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an extension <strong>of</strong> the techniques learned in beginning<br />

photography, with an in-depth study <strong>of</strong> control and analysis <strong>of</strong> light<br />

and its use and application in studio and commercial photography.<br />

PHOT V04B - INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY II - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: PHOT V04A<br />

Recommended preparation: PHOT V01<br />

Hours: 6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an extension <strong>of</strong> the techniques learned in the first<br />

level <strong>of</strong> intermediate photography with emphasis on advertising<br />

photography. Students will learn how to solve photographic problems<br />

utilizing procedures and equipment commonly used in the advertising<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Lectures and demonstrations will concentrate on the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> large format photography using traditional and contemporary<br />

methods. This course will specifically teach the techniques <strong>of</strong><br />

studio/environmental product photography, pr<strong>of</strong>essional printing,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional lighting, and digital media.<br />

PHOT V06A - INTRODUCTION TO COLOR<br />

PHOTOGRAPHY I - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: PHOT V01 or equivalent<br />

Hours: 6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course introduces the student to the principles <strong>of</strong> color<br />

photography and to color lab work. Emphasis will be on the art<br />

and techniques applied to color films, the color camera and the<br />

techniques <strong>of</strong> color printing.<br />
