GW V01G - DYNAMIC JOB SEARCH SKILLS - 1 Unit<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

This course is a comprehensive study <strong>of</strong> effective job search<br />

techniques. Topics will include locating the right employer, writing a<br />

resume, filling out job applications, and developing winning interview<br />

skills. Each student will develop a job search plan and a finished<br />

resume. Audio-visual instruction will include mock interviews.<br />

GW V02A - COLLEGE ORIENTATION - 2 Units<br />

Hours: 2 lecture weekly<br />

This course is designed to provide new students an overall<br />

orientation to facilities, programs, services and faculty at <strong>Ventura</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>. Students will experience a tour <strong>of</strong> the campus facilities,<br />

acquaint themselves with the testing services available, complete the<br />

college assessment instruments for use in course placement, receive<br />

financial aid information, learn requirements for graduation and<br />

transferability <strong>of</strong> courses, and complete their educational plan.<br />

Formerly GW 2A. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Transfer<br />

GW V02B - COLLEGE ORIENTATION AND SURVIVAL TRAINING<br />

(C.O.A.S.T.) - 1 Unit<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

C.O.A.S.T. is a course designed to increase the student’s success<br />

in college by assisting the student in obtaining skills necessary<br />

to reach his/her educational objectives. Topics in this course<br />

include time management, test taking, communication skills, study<br />

techniques, question-asking skills, library use, and personal issues<br />

that may act as barriers to student success.<br />

Field trips may be required. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />

GW V02Q - PEER ADVISING: EOPS - 1.5 Units<br />

Hours: 1.5 lecture weekly<br />

This course is primarily for training students interested in<br />

becoming peer advisors. Techniques in basic communication,<br />

active listening, and interpersonal relationships will be stressed. The<br />

course will include information regarding financial aid, graduation<br />

requirements, transfer requirements, and supportive services. Those<br />

interested in becoming EOPS peer advisors should contact the EOPS<br />

coordinator for further information.<br />

GW V02T - TRANSFER SUCCESS - 2 Units<br />

Hours: 2 lecture weekly<br />

This course is designed to provide students with information<br />

relevant to making a decision regarding major and college choice.<br />

Students will be exposed to the different segments <strong>of</strong> higher<br />

education. Admissions requirements, major preparation requirements,<br />

general education requirements, and elective coursework will be<br />

explored. The application and transition process to point <strong>of</strong> transfer<br />

will be covered. Students will become familiar with various published<br />

resource materials, including various websites.<br />

GW V02X - ORIENTATION WORKSHOP: EOPS - 1 Unit<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

This course is designed to provide new students an overall<br />

will be guided through various activities to help them build their<br />

skill, planning and motivational levels ultimately leading to higher<br />

academic achievement. Students will learn various strategies that<br />

will develop their course/personal planning, time management, study,<br />

organization, goal setting, networking and self-concept skills.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Formerly IDS V60B. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />

GW V88 - GUIDANCE WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

This course will <strong>of</strong>fer specialized study opportunities for students<br />

who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />

Students are accepted only by a written project approved by the<br />

discipline prior to enrollment.<br />

HEALTH EDUCATION<br />

HED V70 - SPIRITUAL HEALTH - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course will allow students to explore, in depth, the impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> the spiritual dimension <strong>of</strong> health within their own individual state<br />

<strong>of</strong> wellness and to explore different ways to build a spiritual life and<br />

thereby improve their own health. Topics include: the difference<br />

between spiritual health and religion; history <strong>of</strong> spiritual practices<br />

throughout the world; components <strong>of</strong> spiritual health; review <strong>of</strong><br />

current mind-body medical research; connectedness; building and<br />

strengthening one’s spiritual life; opening one’s heart; meditation,<br />

contemplation, mindfulness, and imagery; stress reduction and pain<br />

management through spiritual health practices; how spiritual health<br />

can improve the quality <strong>of</strong> life; and, integrating spiritual wellness into<br />

the treatment <strong>of</strong> illness and disease, dying and grief. Students will<br />

practice techniques in mindfulness, visual imagery, and mediation.<br />
