MUS V15 - COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: MUS V14A or V14B or 14C or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is intended for musicians who have experience<br />

playing in an orchestra. Students will become accustomed to<br />

score reading, how to mark scores, and will learn the history <strong>of</strong> the<br />

orchestra. The ensemble rehearses standard orchestra literature in<br />

preparation for public performance.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

MUS V16 - CHORALE - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: MUS V12 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Chorale is designed for singers with singing experience. The<br />

ensemble is a balanced choir which requires students to read music<br />

and rehearse it for public performance. Music is drawn from all<br />

periods <strong>of</strong> great chorale literature.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

MUS V17 - JAZZ BAND - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play an instrument and to read<br />

music<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Jazz Band will focus on the performance <strong>of</strong> Big Band music.<br />

Students will learn about Big Band styles and performance<br />

techniques, as well as the elements <strong>of</strong> tuning and rhythmic notation<br />

analysis. The course will emphasize ensemble performance and<br />

improvisation.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V18 - BAND - 1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play an instrument<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Prepare and perform band literature.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Formerly Mus 18. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

MUS V19 - CHORAL REHEARSAL AND<br />

PERFORMANCE - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: MUS V16 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is for singers who have experience in choral singing<br />

and music reading. The ensemble is a balanced ensemble. Emphasis<br />

will be on the preparation <strong>of</strong> music for a specific performance,<br />

such as a concert, festival, tour or competition. A high standard <strong>of</strong><br />

performance excellence will be expected.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

MUS V21A - CHAMBER MUSIC: WOODWINDS - 1 Unit<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play a woodwind instrument<br />

Hours: 2 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course will provide students an opportunity to rehearse<br />

and perform in small woodwind ensembles. Emphasis will be on<br />

ensemble balance, musical phrasing, dynamics, and interpretation.<br />

Repertoire will be taken from standard classical literature for<br />

woodwind ensembles.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />

MUS V21B - CHAMBER MUSIC: BRASS - 1 Unit<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play a brass instrument<br />

Hours: 2 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course will provide students an opportunity to rehearse and<br />

perform in small brass or mixed ensembles. Emphasis will be on<br />

ensemble balance, musical phrasing, dynamics, and interpretations.<br />

Repertoire will be taken from standard classical literature for brass or<br />

mixed ensembles.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />

MUS V21C - CHAMBER MUSIC: STRINGS AND<br />

KEYBOARDS - 1 Unit<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to play a string or keyboard<br />

instrument<br />

Hours: 2 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course will provide students an opportunity to rehearse and<br />

perform in small string, keyboard or mixed ensembles. Emphasis<br />

will be on ensemble balance, musical phrasing, dynamics, and<br />

interpretation. Repertoire will be taken from standard classical<br />

literature for strings, keyboards and/or mixed ensembles.<br />

MUS V22A - ADVANCED CHAMBER MUSIC:<br />

MUS V24A - KEYBOARDS I - 2 Units<br />

Hours: 4 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> keyboard playing, music reading, technique,<br />

scales, transposition, simple keyboard harmonization, and simple<br />

keyboard literature. Designed for the student with little or no prior<br />

keyboard experience.<br />
