RE V12 - REAL ESTATE FINANCE - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is an orientation and introduction to real estate<br />

finance. Areas <strong>of</strong> emphasis include: the mortgage money market;<br />

lenders; the mathematics <strong>of</strong> real estate finance; loan applications;<br />

processing and closing; qualifying buyers; credit reports; and,<br />

conventional and government loans.<br />

Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />

RECREATION<br />

REC V41 - INTRODUCTION TO THE BACKCOUNTRY - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to safe backcountry camping and<br />

travel, including but not limited to leave-no-trace ethics, equipment<br />

choices and use, first aid and safety, clothing, meal preparation and<br />

planning, emergency preparation and prevention, site selection, map<br />

and compass skills, trip planning, survival skills, leadership and<br />

rescue skills, environmental awareness, and management skills.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times. Formerly Rec 41. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

SIGN LANGUAGE<br />

SL V10A - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: BEGINNING - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This is an introductory course in American Sign Language, the<br />

native language <strong>of</strong> the deaf. Topics will include: instruction in the<br />

basic language structure, manual signs, fingerspelling, grammar,<br />

syntax, tense indicators, idioms, and gestures required for beginning<br />

manual communication with members <strong>of</strong> the deaf community and<br />

other signers. Students will also begin to explore aspects <strong>of</strong> deaf<br />

culture and the dynamics <strong>of</strong> the deaf community.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly SL 10A. Transfer credit:<br />

CSU; UC.<br />

SL V10B - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE:<br />

INTERMEDIATE - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: SL V10A or 2 years <strong>of</strong> high school ASL or equivalent<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This is a course in American Sign Language that includes<br />

intermediate-level instruction in the language structure, manual signs,<br />

fingerspelling, vocabulary, grammar, syntax, tense indicators, idioms,<br />

and gestures required for manual communication with members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the deaf community and other signers at the intermediate level.<br />

Students will expand their discussions <strong>of</strong> multiple aspects <strong>of</strong> deaf<br />

culture and the dynamics <strong>of</strong> the deaf community.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly<br />

SL 10B. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

SL V10C - AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: ADVANCED - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: SL V10B or 3 years <strong>of</strong> high school ASL or equivalent<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course in American Sign Language emphasizes<br />

conversational fluency in ASL through intensive work on<br />

comprehensive skills, grammatical structure, conceptual accuracy<br />

and translation <strong>of</strong> English idioms to American Sign Language.<br />

Students will continue to engage in discussions <strong>of</strong> various aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

deaf culture and the dynamics <strong>of</strong> the deaf community.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly SL 10C. Transfer credit:<br />

SL V88 - SIGN LANGUAGE WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

SOCIOLOGY<br />

SOC V01 - INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course examines human social behavior in groups in relation<br />

to the wider social forces which influence that behavior, such as:<br />

socioeconomic status, gender, race/ethnicity, and age. Theoretical<br />

perspectives as well as scientific methodology are utilized to explore<br />

culture, social interaction, social organizations, socialization, social<br />

institutions, population dynamics and social change.<br />

SOC V01SL - INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY: SERVICE<br />

LEARNING - .5 Unit<br />

Corequisite: SOC V01<br />

Hours: .5 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces students to the basic aims and<br />

processes <strong>of</strong> service learning as they relate to sociology. Topics<br />

will include the importance <strong>of</strong> community participation, oral and<br />

written communication skills, teamwork, leadership, and diversity<br />

awareness. Emphasis is also placed on critical reflection <strong>of</strong> the role<br />

<strong>of</strong> the student as an active citizen in his or her community.<br />

Field trips will be required. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

SOC V02 - SOCIAL PROBLEMS - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course will examine current American social problems, such<br />

as: health care; crime; substance abuse; domestic violence; AIDS;<br />

the environment; and the inequalities <strong>of</strong> race, sex, age, education<br />

and social class. Analysis <strong>of</strong> factors leading to their emergence,<br />

their consequences and proposals for solving these problems will be<br />

discussed. Students will be <strong>of</strong>fered the opportunity to do volunteer<br />

work with public and private agencies working in the covered<br />

problem areas.<br />
