HEC V07 - HISTORY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ARTS - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> historic periods <strong>of</strong><br />

architectural and interior design styles from antiquity to the present.<br />

Influential movements in design are examined including origins,<br />

practitioners, and significance to contemporary styles.<br />

Field trips may be required. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

HEC V09 - FOODS - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course presents basic knowledge <strong>of</strong> food science principles<br />

and food preparation techniques. Emphasis is placed on ingredient<br />

interaction, technique and production standards, food safety,<br />

sanitation, nutrient values, and food presentations. Core components<br />

<strong>of</strong> the course are: food science principles; food preparation<br />

terminology and techniques; ingredient interaction; standards <strong>of</strong><br />

product evaluation and quality control; selection and use <strong>of</strong> food<br />

equipment and utensils; food storage and preservation; sanitation<br />

and safety; nutrient retention techniques; and, labeling and consumer<br />

information.<br />

HEC V10 - NUTRITION - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

The basic nutritional needs <strong>of</strong> children and adults are studied<br />

through critical examination <strong>of</strong> the principles <strong>of</strong> human nutrition as<br />

related to health and types <strong>of</strong> diets.<br />

HEC V11 - BASIC SEWING TECHNIQUES - 2 Units<br />

Hours: 1 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

Designed for the non-sewer, this course teaches the use <strong>of</strong> a<br />

sewing machine and commercial patterns in the construction <strong>of</strong><br />

simple clothing, and home decor projects.<br />

HEC V12A - CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION I - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: basic sewing skills<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course teaches a variety <strong>of</strong> beginning to moderately difficult<br />

construction and alteration techniques in addition to the utilization <strong>of</strong><br />

more advanced commercial patterns.<br />

HEC V12B - CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION II - 2 Units<br />

Prerequisite: HEC V12A or equivalent<br />

Hours: 1 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course teaches moderately difficult skills and techniques for<br />

creating clothing, and adapting patterns for a more personal style.<br />

Emphasis will be placed on a variety <strong>of</strong> applications for specialized<br />

uses.<br />

HEC V13A - ADVANCED SEWING TECHNIQUES - 2 Units<br />

Prerequisite: HEC V12B or equivalent<br />

Hours: 1 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course teaches the application <strong>of</strong> advanced techniques in<br />

custom sewing and handling special fabrics, such as leather, furs,<br />

and sheers. Special emphasis will be placed upon fine finishing detail<br />

for couture garments.<br />

HEC V13B - TAILORING - 2 Units<br />

Prerequisite: HEC V12B or equivalent<br />

Hours: 1 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

Both traditional and contemporary principles will be covered in this<br />

tailoring class. Concepts <strong>of</strong> pattern selection, sizing and construction<br />

techniques for suits and coats will be taught.<br />

Fees will be required. Field trips may be required. May be taken for<br />

a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2 times. Formerly HE 13B. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

HEC V15 - TEXTILES - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to textiles, including natural and<br />

man-made fibers, and yarns. Topics will include fabric construction,<br />

dyes, finishes, care, and legislation affecting the textile industry.<br />

Emphasis is placed on selection criteria for textiles in apparel and<br />

home furnishings.<br />

HEC V16 - FLAT PATTERN DESIGN - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: HEC V12A or equivalent sewing and<br />

clothing construction skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course provides an introduction to the designing <strong>of</strong> patterns<br />

through the flat pattern method. Students will receive instruction<br />

in drafting the basic block, multiple darts and gathers, style lines,<br />

sleeves, collars, skirts, and bodice silhouettes.<br />

Fees will be required. Field trips may be required. May be taken for<br />

a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2 times. Formerly HE 16. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

HEC V17 - KNIT FABRICS - 2 Units<br />

Hours: 1 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course will cover techniques for handling knit fabrics,<br />

including special knits, lingerie, sweater knits, and active wear.<br />

Fees will be required. Field trips may be required. May be taken for<br />

a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2 times. Formerly HE 17.<br />

HEC V18 - FASHION ANALYSIS - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is a study and application <strong>of</strong> the elements and<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> design as they are related to apparel for the individual.<br />

Topics covered will include: application <strong>of</strong> principles and elements <strong>of</strong><br />

design theory; significance <strong>of</strong> apparel—psychological, sociological,<br />

physiological, and cultural; apparel and lifestyle; wardrobe planning<br />

and budgeting; apparel for special needs; and care <strong>of</strong> apparel.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly HE 18. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

HEC V21 - SPECIAL CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION<br />

PROJECTS - 2 Units<br />

Prerequisite: HEC V12B or equivalent<br />

Hours: 1 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an individual projects course designed for the<br />

student desiring experience in specialized clothing construction<br />

areas. Topics will include: factory methods for home operations,<br />

bridal and formal wear, specialized commercial needs, and business<br />

or personal interest applications.<br />

Fees will be required. Field trips may be required. May be taken for<br />
