PE V14 - DEEP WATER RUNNING AND<br />

CONDITIONING - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: comfort in deep water<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course provides an exercise program <strong>of</strong> aerobic conditioning<br />

and strength training in deep water that is designed to improve the<br />

level <strong>of</strong> fitness <strong>of</strong> students <strong>of</strong> all ages. This course is well-suited<br />

for those who wish to experience a non-weight bearing workout for<br />

an alternative cross-training regimen, or for those who seek a safe<br />

mode <strong>of</strong> exercise for rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> injuries, either chronic or acute.<br />

PE V14, V15, V36 & V37 may be taken in any combination for<br />

a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 14. Transfer credit: CSU; UC;<br />

PE V23 - HIKING FOR FITNESS - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: 2-3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed to provide fitness and technical training<br />

for beginning as well as more advanced students. Proper technique<br />

and cardiovascular conditioning will be emphasized. Hikes will be<br />

easy at first and progress in difficulty throughout the semester.<br />

Topics will include safety, equipment, benefits <strong>of</strong> hiking and<br />

environmental impact. Students will meet at a new hiking spot in<br />

<strong>Ventura</strong> County each week.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

PE V31 - SELF-DEFENSE AND ASSAULT<br />

PREVENTION - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to self-defense, personal and<br />

community safety, and assault prevention. Emphasis will be placed<br />

on practical techniques and methods <strong>of</strong> self-defense and the<br />

application <strong>of</strong> assault prevention strategies.<br />

May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 31. Transfer<br />

credit: CSU; UC; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V32 - AIKIDO - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

Aikido is a powerful martial art developed in Japan by Morihei<br />

Veshiba. Through the study <strong>of</strong> principles and theory <strong>of</strong> ancient<br />

fighting methods, Veshiba was able to develop a method <strong>of</strong><br />

nonresistive and noncompetitive technique. The practice <strong>of</strong> Aikido<br />

includes warm-up and flexibility exercises, practical combative and<br />

defensible techniques combined with an appreciation for formal<br />

etiquette. Students will develop a greater understanding <strong>of</strong> the<br />

relationship between mind, body and spirit that will help them deal<br />

with both physical and mental conflict in a more positive way.<br />

Field trips may be required. PE V32/CJ V11 may be taken in any<br />

combination for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 32. Same as CJ<br />

PE V33 - DEFENSIVE TACTICS: JU JITSU - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This is a self-defense course for the peace <strong>of</strong>ficer and civilian. It<br />

is designed to provide instruction in the simplest and most effective<br />

methods for neutralizing and controlling an attacker or suspect.<br />

Emphasis will be placed on Ju Jitsu techniques that do not require<br />

upper body strength.<br />

Field trips may be required. PE V33, V34/CJ V12A, V12B may be<br />

taken in any combination for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 33.<br />

Same as CJ V12A. Transfer credit: CSU; UC; credit limitations - see<br />

counselor.<br />

PE V34 - INTERMEDIATE JU JITSU - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: CJ V12A or PE V33<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This is a self-defense course for students desiring to develop<br />

intermediate-level skills in Ju Jitsu.<br />

Field trips may be required. PE V33, V34/CJ V12A, V12B may be<br />

taken in any combination for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 34.<br />

Same as CJ V12B. Transfer credit: CSU; UC; credit limitations - see<br />

counselor.<br />

PE V36 - WALKING TO RESTORE FITNESS - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course will provide students with fitness training through<br />

walking. Individualized programs will be developed based on each<br />

student's current fitness level. Most rehabilitation needs can be<br />

accommodated. There will be an emphasis on developing and<br />

maintaining cardiovascular conditioning, muscle tone, and weight<br />

management.<br />

PE V14, V15, V36 & V37 may be taken in any combination for<br />

a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 36. Transfer credit: CSU; UC;<br />

PE V37 - RUNNING FOR FITNESS - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an exercise program <strong>of</strong> relaxed running that is<br />

designed to improve the level <strong>of</strong> fitness <strong>of</strong> nearly everyone at any age<br />

or skill level. Topics will include the physiology <strong>of</strong> running, guidelines<br />

for proper nutrition, stretching and warm-up, and the development <strong>of</strong><br />

an individualized running program.<br />

PE V14, V15, V36 & V37 may be taken in any combination for<br />

a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 37. Transfer credit: CSU; UC;<br />

credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V38 - TRIATHLON CONDITIONING - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ability to swim, bike, and run<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to triathlon conditioning and<br />

competition. Emphasis will be placed on assessment, evaluation<br />

and critique <strong>of</strong> individual swimming, biking and running techniques<br />

as applied in a competitive racing environment. Structured learning<br />

opportunities will emphasize correct bio-mechanical techniques,<br />

cardiovascular conditioning and monitoring, safety considerations,<br />

nutrition and diet, race strategies, pre-race and race day preparation,<br />

transitioning techniques, training, tapering, and racing schedules.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

PE V41 - WEIGHT TRAINING AND CONDITIONING<br />

- 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed to increase understanding <strong>of</strong> the<br />

principles <strong>of</strong> muscular fitness and to develop and maintain a high<br />

level <strong>of</strong> muscular fitness, muscle strength, endurance and flexibility.<br />

Participation in this course will improve body form and function<br />

through conditioning exercises and increase muscle strength,<br />

endurance and flexibility using principles <strong>of</strong> resistive hyperkinetic<br />

exercises. Emphasis will be placed on the utilization <strong>of</strong> the overload<br />

principle and its relationship to muscle fitness.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
