COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

PE V01 - SWIMMING FOR THE NONSWIMMER - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course introduces the basic elements <strong>of</strong> swimming skills and<br />

safety practices. Topics include water safety procedures, floating<br />

on back and on front, front and back kick, arm movements, and an<br />

introduction to the front crawl, back crawl, and the elementary back<br />

stroke.<br />

May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 1. Transfer<br />

credit: CSU; UC; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V02 - SWIMMING: BEGINNING - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: 20 yards continuous swim on stomach<br />

and 20 yards continuous swim on back<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

To instruct the student in four basic strokes; to develop the ability<br />

to survive in deep water; and to develop cardiovascular endurance.<br />

PE V02, V03 & V04 may be taken in any combination for a<br />

maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 2.<br />

PE V03 - SWIMMING: INTERMEDIATE - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: PE V02 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

To perfect the five basic strokes in swimming; to expand the<br />

knowledge and use <strong>of</strong> survival techniques and safety; and to develop<br />

cardiovascular endurance.<br />

PE V02, V03 & V04 may be taken in any combination for a<br />

maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 3. Transfer credit: CSU; UC; credit<br />

limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V04 - SWIMMING: ADVANCED - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: PE V03 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed to instruct students in the basic<br />

swimming strokes at the demonstration level. Students will develop<br />

additional swimming strokes, learn water safety techniques, and<br />

maintain a high level <strong>of</strong> cardiovascular endurance.<br />

PE V02, V03 & V04 may be taken in any combination for a<br />

maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 4. Transfer credit: CSU; UC; credit<br />

limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V06 - SWIMMING FOR CONDITIONING - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: PE V03 or demonstrated swimming<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed to instruct students to withstand a<br />

systematic, vigorous training schedule which will result in the<br />

development and maintenance <strong>of</strong> vital processes required for<br />

physical fitness. Endurance training and stroke pr<strong>of</strong>iciency will be<br />

stressed.<br />

May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 6. Transfer<br />

credit: CSU; UC; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V07 - LAP SWIMMING - 1 Unit<br />

Recommended preparation: PE V02 or equivalent skills<br />

Hours: 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed to meet the specific needs <strong>of</strong> extended<br />

practice in the water medium by those students who have become<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>icient in basic swimming strokes and are unable to reach their<br />

goals with our present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 7. Transfer<br />

credit: CSU; UC; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V09 - WATER POLO - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: PE V02 or equivalent swimming skills<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course is designed to instruct students in the philosophy and<br />

strategy <strong>of</strong> water polo, beginning with the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> the game<br />

and progressing to team play, both <strong>of</strong>fense and defense.<br />

May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly PE 9. Transfer<br />

credit: CSU; UC; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

PE V12 - WATER AEROBICS - 1-1.5 Units<br />

Hours: .5-1 lecture, 1.5-2 laboratory weekly<br />

This course provides an exercise program <strong>of</strong> aerobic conditioning<br />

and muscular endurance performed in shallow water. It is a low<br />

impact workout that uses the resistance <strong>of</strong> water to improve the<br />

physical condition <strong>of</strong> students <strong>of</strong> all ages and fitness levels.<br />

PE V12 & V47 may be taken in any combination for a maximum <strong>of</strong><br />
