HIST V18A - WORLD HISTORY I - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is a survey <strong>of</strong> major developments among world<br />

peoples from antiquity to 1550, with particular emphasis on the<br />

dynamic interaction and comparison <strong>of</strong> world cultures and their<br />

institutions. The focus is on the role played by social, political,<br />

economic, religious, and other cultural forces in shaping major world<br />

cultures and their histories, and the legacy <strong>of</strong> these peoples for those<br />

who followed and for our world today.<br />

HIST V18B - WORLD HISTORY II - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is a survey <strong>of</strong> world history from the sixteenth century<br />

to the present, with particular emphasis on the dynamic interaction<br />

and comparison <strong>of</strong> peoples and cultures. The focus is on the<br />

role played by social, political, economic, cultural, technological,<br />

and religious forces in shaping the histories <strong>of</strong> the major regional<br />

civilizations <strong>of</strong> the world, the interactions <strong>of</strong> the various civilizations,<br />

and their collective contributions to our global community.<br />

HIST V20 - INTRODUCTION TO WORLD HISTORY OF THE<br />

20TH AND 21ST CENTURIES - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course will examine the major events and trends in the world<br />

from the 20th century to the present. Topics will include political<br />

events, conflict and conflict resolution, social history, the revolution<br />

in science, the spread <strong>of</strong> technology, significant business and<br />

economic trends, changing demographics, and popular culture.<br />

HIST V21 - HISTORY OF THE MODERN MIDDLE<br />

EAST - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course examines the history <strong>of</strong> the Middle East from 1800<br />

to the present. Its geographic focus will be Egypt, the Fertile<br />

Crescent, Arabia, Iran, and Turkey. Particular emphasis is given to<br />

the relationship between Islam and the social/political history <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Middle East; the impact <strong>of</strong> Western imperialism and the process<br />

<strong>of</strong> decolonization; and the historical roots <strong>of</strong> contemporary policy<br />

issues.<br />

HIST V30 - HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN WEST - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course examines the American West from Pre-Columbian to<br />

modern times. Emphasis is placed upon the westward movement,<br />

the role <strong>of</strong> women and minorities in shaping the West, and the<br />

interaction <strong>of</strong> Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Anglo<br />

Americans, and other groups who settled the region <strong>of</strong> the West<br />

(west <strong>of</strong> the 100th Meridian). The course also examines the pivotal<br />

role <strong>of</strong> resources and economic development in shaping the West.<br />

HIST V88 - HISTORY WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />

required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />

not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

Fees may be required. <strong>Courses</strong> with same title may not be<br />

repeated; may be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times.<br />

who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />

Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />

the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />
