SS V01 - STUDY SKILLS: APPLICATIONS TO COLLEGE-LEVEL<br />

COURSEWORK - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: SS V02 or placement as measured by<br />

the college assessment process<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is an advanced study skills course designed for<br />

students who are currently taking academic or vocational classes<br />

(such as students in the nursing program) and would like to<br />

refine their study skills and apply them to their coursework. It<br />

includes advanced note-taking applications, library research, time<br />

management, taking in-class essay exams, practice in taking timed<br />

standardized tests, and designing reading study guides.<br />

Formerly SS 1. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Transfer<br />

credit: CSU; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

SS V02 - STUDY SKILLS: PREPARATION FOR ACADEMIC AND<br />

VOCATIONAL COURSES - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ENGL V08A or ENGL V08B or ESL V34A<br />

or ESL V34B or placement as measured by the college assessment<br />

process<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is designed for students who are currently taking,<br />

or are preparing to take, academic or vocational classes. It covers<br />

note-taking and listening skills, introduction to outlining, reading<br />

and study techniques, library skills, time management and priority<br />

determination, memory and test-taking strategies, and campus and<br />

community resources. Students will learn through lectures, group<br />

discussions, campus tours, videos and assignments.<br />

Formerly SS 2. Not applicable for degree credit.<br />

SS V03 - EXPERT LEARNER I - 2 Units<br />

Hours: 2 lecture weekly<br />

This course is a bridge for students who are attending college<br />

for the first time or returning after an absence from an educational<br />

setting. It covers learning styles, cultural and linguistic challenges<br />

and strategies, using technology to enhance learning, utilizing<br />

campus resources, developing effective student/instructor<br />

relationships and time management. Students will learn through<br />

lectures, collaborative group work, group discussions, campus tours,<br />

videos and assignments.<br />

Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree<br />

credit.<br />

SS V04 - EXPERT LEARNER II - 2 Units<br />

Hours: 2 lecture weekly<br />

This is a study skills course for students who are attending college<br />

for the first time or returning to college after an absence from an<br />

educational setting. It is intended for students who need preparation<br />

for academic and/or vocational courses. It includes topics such as<br />

reading, test-taking strategies, note-taking and memory skills.<br />

Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree<br />

credit.<br />

SS V88 - STUDY SKILLS WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />

required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />

not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

Fees may be required. <strong>Courses</strong> with same title may not be<br />

repeated; may be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly SS V89.<br />

SUP V81 - BUSINESS ENGLISH - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers the practical application <strong>of</strong> college-level<br />

business English skills, which include reading, writing, speaking<br />

and listening, with comprehensive coverage <strong>of</strong> language structure,<br />

punctuation, spelling usage, word usage, pro<strong>of</strong>reading, and editing.<br />

Formerly Sup 81. Same as BUS V44. Transfer credit: CSU; credit<br />

limitations - see counselor.<br />

SUP V88 - SUPERVISION WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

SUP V90 - INTRODUCTION TO SUPERVISION - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is an introduction to supervision, designed for public<br />

and private sector managers. Topics will include the major functions<br />

<strong>of</strong> supervision in the areas <strong>of</strong> diversity awareness, decision making<br />

communication, motivation, change and innovation, planning and<br />

organizing, group and team work, leadership, evaluation, and<br />

supervisory control. Emphasis will be on the skills needed to make<br />

the transition from worker to supervisor.<br />
