COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

HMSV V50 - INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK: SOCIAL<br />

WELFARE INSTITUTIONS - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course provides a general understanding <strong>of</strong> social work and<br />

social welfare practice. It will include an analysis <strong>of</strong> the current<br />

functions and purposes <strong>of</strong> social welfare as an institution. The<br />

historical and philosophical perspectives <strong>of</strong> social work practice<br />

within the context <strong>of</strong> cultural, political, economic, psychological and<br />

social forces will also be examined.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly SOC V50. Transfer credit:<br />

HMSV V51 - BASIC SKILLS IN SOCIAL WORK<br />

METHODS I - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces students to theoretical perspectives<br />

<strong>of</strong> social work practices, ethics and skills and will include the<br />

application <strong>of</strong> knowledge related to gender, race, culture, ethnicity,<br />

sexual orientation, class and ability. Students learn basic theories and<br />

methodologies in interviewing, counseling, and case management<br />

skills.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly SOC V51. Transfer credit:<br />

HMSV V52 - BASIC SKILLS IN SOCIAL WORK<br />

METHODS II - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course explores in depth the beginning dimensions <strong>of</strong> social<br />

work practices from a systems perspective. The role <strong>of</strong> values, ethics<br />

and ethical decision making are examined as students learn theories<br />

and methodologies involved in group dynamics, problem solving, and<br />

crisis intervention.<br />

HMSV V53 - INTRODUCTION TO MENTAL HEALTH<br />

REHABILITATION - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course provides students with an introduction to the recovery<br />

process in persons with severe, persistent mental illness. The<br />

course provides the framework for understanding the social model<br />

approach to recovery and creates an awareness <strong>of</strong> the skills and<br />

knowledge needed for careers in psychosocial rehabilitation. Topics<br />

include: an overview <strong>of</strong> principles and theories <strong>of</strong> medical and social<br />

model rehabilitation for persons with mental illness; the role <strong>of</strong><br />

the mental health rehabilitation practitioner; relapse and recovery;<br />

ethical decision making and pr<strong>of</strong>essional boundaries; differences in<br />

learning styles; cultural and diversity issues; community resources;<br />

the judicial system; educational, vocational and leisure options for<br />

clients; theories and practices in employment placement for mentally<br />

ill persons; and, implications <strong>of</strong> the American with Disabilities Act.<br />

This course prepares the student for the National Credentialing<br />

Examination for the Mental Health Rehabilitation Practitioner.<br />

HMSV V88 - HUMAN SERVICES WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />

required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />

not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

Fees may be required. <strong>Courses</strong> with same title may not be<br />

repeated; may be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times.<br />

HMSV V89 - WORKSHOPS IN HUMAN SERVICES - .5-10 Units<br />

Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />

required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />

not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

HMSV V90 - DIRECTED STUDIES IN HUMAN<br />

SERVICES - 1-6 Units<br />

Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers specialized study opportunities for students<br />

who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />

Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />

the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times not to exceed 6 units. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

HMSV V95 - HUMAN SERVICES VOLUNTEER<br />

INTERNSHIP - 1-4 Units<br />

Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />

Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />

in one course in the discipline<br />

Hours: 60 per unit<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are volunteers (unpaid) an<br />

opportunity to obtain work experience related to their field <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Students are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a designated<br />

faculty member in the discipline and the acceptance <strong>of</strong> an approved<br />

work proposal.<br />

Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other work<br />

experience/internship courses. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />

Transfer credit: CSU; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />
