HMSV V96 - HUMAN SERVICES WORK EXPERIENCE<br />
INTERNSHIP - 1-4 Units<br />
Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />
Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />
in one course in the discipline<br />
Hours: 75 per unit<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are employed in the field an<br />
opportunity to expand their work experience related to their field<br />
<strong>of</strong> study. Students are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a<br />
designated faculty member in the discipline and the acceptance <strong>of</strong> an<br />
approved work proposal.<br />
Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other work<br />
experience/internship courses. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />
Transfer credit: CSU; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES<br />
IDS V01 - CALWORKS ORIENTATION - .5-3 Units<br />
Hours: 1-6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />
This course is designed to provide an orientation to facilities,<br />
programs, and services at <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> in order to increase<br />
student success in college. Students will receive information about<br />
the county's CalWORKs history, policies, and procedures and<br />
they will complete an Individual Training Plan (ITP). Also covered<br />
in the course will be information about the college catalog, class<br />
schedule and course planning, financial aid, graduation and transfer<br />
requirements, and college success skills. Students will complete an<br />
online orientation and the Guide to Success.<br />
May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Offered on a pass/no<br />
pass basis only.<br />
IDS V02 - INTRODUCTION TO STEM DISCIPLINES - 1 Unit<br />
Hours: 3 laboratory weekly<br />
This course is designed to encourage students to consider<br />
majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics<br />
(STEM) discipline. The course introduces students to STEM<br />
disciplines while engaging them in relevant technical activities<br />
supervised by <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> faculty. The primary emphasis <strong>of</strong><br />
these activities is to allow students to use technologies commonly<br />
encountered in STEM fields. The secondary emphasis <strong>of</strong> these<br />
activities is to use these technologies in conjunction with the<br />
scientific method for sample analysis and data collection.<br />

IDS V08 - ETHICS IN MODERN SOCIETY - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course provides an introduction to the philosophy <strong>of</strong> ethics in<br />
our modern-day society. It integrates ethical issues from areas such<br />
as environmental studies, bioethics, criminal justice, business and<br />
law, the media, literature, medicine, politics, theatre, and from the<br />
field <strong>of</strong> psychology. In addition to lectures and discussions in each<br />
<strong>of</strong> these areas, movies, videos and a theatrical production may be<br />
included to help illustrate specific ethical issues.<br />

UC.<br />
IDS V09 - TUTORIAL PROCEDURES AND METHODS - .5 Unit<br />
Hours: .5 lecture weekly<br />
This course is required for students who are interested in being<br />
tutors at <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong>. It is an introduction to the theories and<br />
methods <strong>of</strong> effective tutoring including communication techniques,<br />
learning theories and individual and group instruction. The course is<br />
designed to provide the student tutor with experience, information,<br />
and techniques that will make him/her a more effective tutor.<br />
Formerly HUM V15. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />
IDS V13 - INTRODUCTION TO TUTORING WRITING AND<br />
READING - 1 Unit<br />
Recommended preparation: IDS V09 or concurrent enrollment<br />
Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />
This course is required for students who will be tutors or<br />
supplemental instruction leaders <strong>of</strong> writing and reading at <strong>Ventura</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong>. Students tutors will learn to help student writers throughout<br />
the writing process and to work with students <strong>of</strong> varying pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
and from diverse backgrounds. Course topics will include: a review<br />
<strong>of</strong> general tutoring skills, tutoring writing, working with sentencelevel<br />
errors, the reading-writing connection, learning skills and<br />
learning disabilities, and special tutoring situations. After an initial<br />
orientation, including readings and in-class exercises, students will<br />
complete a tutoring practicum and use class time to analyze and<br />
reflect on those tutoring sessions.<br />

IDS V88 - INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES<br />
WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />
Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />
required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />
not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />
