COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

JOUR V01 - MASS COMMUNICATION - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces students to mass communication forms,<br />

media and technologies, including a survey <strong>of</strong> their function,<br />

responsibilities and practice, as well as their history, development,<br />

influence on society, and potential for the future. It <strong>of</strong>fers students an<br />

overview <strong>of</strong> all phases <strong>of</strong> mass communication and communication<br />

technology in this information-conscious society, and the effects <strong>of</strong><br />

media on themselves and others.<br />

JOUR V05A - WRITING FOR THE MEDIA I - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: ENGL V01A<br />

Recommended preparation: keyboarding and word processing skills<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course introduces the skills that are critical to reporting and<br />

writing for print, broadcast and online media: gathering, assessing,<br />

and prioritizing information; writing news stories; and using the tools<br />

<strong>of</strong> the various media to ready the story for public consumption. The<br />

course will include news, feature, opinion, sports, and entertainment<br />

writing. Students will work collaboratively and receive hands-on<br />

experience in college media projects.<br />

JOUR V05B - WRITING FOR THE MEDIA II - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: JOUR V05A<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course continues to develop skills that are critical to reporting<br />

and writing for print, broadcast, and online media: gathering and<br />

prioritizing information, writing news stories, and using the tools<br />

<strong>of</strong> the various media to ready the story for public consumption. It<br />

emphasizes individual reporting and specialty reporting, including<br />

feature, investigative, persuasive and in-depth writing for publication.<br />

Students will work collaboratively and receive hands-on experience in<br />

college media projects.<br />

JOUR V09 - INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE<br />

JOURNALISM - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: JOUR V05A<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course introduces the information and skills that are critical<br />

to reporting and writing specifically for the Internet. Students will<br />

learn the similarities and the differences between writing for the<br />

Internet and other media, the kinds <strong>of</strong> stories the Internet requires,<br />

and the law and ethics <strong>of</strong> online journalism. They will also learn how<br />

to gather information and materials to write the stories and create<br />

multimedia elements for them. Students will work collaboratively and<br />

receive hands-on experience.<br />

JOUR V10 - MEDIA PRODUCTION - 4 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: JOUR V05A<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

This course introduces the skills that are critical to producing<br />

news reports for print, broadcast and online media: writing,<br />

assigning, evaluating and editing stories; assigning, evaluating and<br />

editing visual components for stories; and formatting and delivering<br />

the news in any and all media. Students will work collaboratively and<br />

receive hands-on experience in college media projects.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />

times. Formerly JOUR V10A. Transfer credit: CSU; credit limitations -<br />

see counselor.<br />

JOUR V11 - VISUAL JOURNALISM - 4 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: JOUR V05A; and basic knowledge <strong>of</strong> art<br />

and design principles<br />

Hours: 2 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

This course introduces the skills that are critical to visual<br />

presentation <strong>of</strong> the news for print, broadcast and online media,<br />

from visual storytelling to researching and creating visual content,<br />

including infographics, photographs, illustrations and multimedia<br />

graphics, and the written information that accompanies them.<br />

Students will work collaboratively and receive hands-on experience<br />

in college media projects.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />

times. Formerly JOUR V11A. Transfer credit: CSU; credit limitations -<br />

see counselor.<br />

JOUR V15 - COMPUTER ASSISTED REPORTING<br />

AND EDITING - 3 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: basic word processing and Internet skills<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course introduces the skills that are crucial to computer<br />

assisted researching, and to investigating and editing news for<br />

print, broadcast, and online media. The course will review finding<br />

and using information sources and resources via the Web and other<br />

modes, and will examine copy-editing stories and writing headlines<br />

and cutlines. Students will work collaboratively and receive hands-on<br />

experience in college media projects.<br />

CSU; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

JOUR V30 - PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY PRACTICUM - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: PHOT V01 or previous practical experience<br />

Hours: 3 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />

This course is a survey <strong>of</strong> the principles <strong>of</strong> photo journalism.<br />

Students will learn the skills necessary to provide photographs for<br />

a newspaper or other publications. The course stresses learning<br />

through practical experience.<br />

Field trips may be required. JOUR V30/PHOT V30 may be taken in<br />

any combination for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Formerly Jour 30. Same<br />

as PHOT V30.<br />
