Graduation Application Procedures<br />

Students may apply for graduation by scheduling a counseling<br />

appointment to submit an application for graduation. The student<br />

may elect to be either a fall graduate, a spring graduate, or a<br />

summer graduate, depending upon the completion <strong>of</strong> all necessary<br />

graduation requirements; however, formal graduation ceremonies<br />

are conducted only at the conclusion <strong>of</strong> each academic year. The<br />

deadline dates for submission <strong>of</strong> graduation applications are printed<br />

in the <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Schedule <strong>of</strong> Classes. If for any reason a<br />

student fails to submit an application prior to the published deadline,<br />

he or she may submit the application for the following graduation<br />

period.<br />

Guidelines for Additional Degree<br />

Any college in the <strong>Ventura</strong> County Community <strong>College</strong> District<br />

will award an additional associate degree under the following<br />

conditions:<br />

1. A student who has earned an associate degree at any<br />

regionally accredited institution may earn an additional associate<br />

degree.<br />

2. A student who holds a higher degree from any regionally<br />

accredited institution may earn an associate degree in a specific<br />

major (this excludes the Associate in Arts in <strong>General</strong> Studies).<br />

3. <strong>General</strong> education requirements earned for one degree may<br />

be applied toward another degree.<br />

4. A candidate for an additional degree must complete 12 or<br />

more units <strong>of</strong> credit, in residence, at <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> concurrent<br />

with or after the completion <strong>of</strong> requirements for the first associate<br />

degree. In addition, a candidate must be in attendance at <strong>Ventura</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> in the semester during which graduation requirements for<br />

the additional degree are completed.<br />

5. A student must complete all the required courses listed<br />

in the catalog for the specific majors. In the event that unmet<br />

requirements for a specific major do not total 12 units, a student<br />

must complete the remaining units from electives listed under the<br />

major or courses as approved by the appropriate division.<br />

6. In the case <strong>of</strong> degrees <strong>of</strong>fering two or more options, a student<br />

may earn an additional degree within the same field by completing<br />

the requirements for that option (the additional degree) and all other<br />

requirements specified herein.<br />

Appeals to the above policy may be submitted to the Dean<br />

<strong>of</strong> Student Services. Waivers may be granted under extenuating<br />

circumstances or when there has not been sufficient opportunity<br />

to enroll in required courses.<br />

Other Programs<br />

The <strong>Ventura</strong> County Community <strong>College</strong> District <strong>of</strong>fers other<br />

programs <strong>of</strong> career and technical education at Moorpark and<br />

Oxnard <strong>College</strong>s which are open to all district residents.<br />

MOORPARK COLLEGE: computer network systems engineering;<br />

exotic animal training and management; graphic design; health<br />

information management; and, radiologic technology.<br />

OXNARD COLLEGE: addictive disorders studies; air conditioning/<br />

refrigeration; automotive body and fender; culinary arts; dental<br />

assisting; dental hygiene; fire academy; fire technology; restaurant<br />

management; and, legal assisting.<br />

Catalog Rights / Continuous Enrollment<br />

A student remaining in continuous enrollment at one or more<br />

<strong>of</strong> the colleges <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ventura</strong> County Community <strong>College</strong> District<br />

(VCCCD) or at any other regionally accredited college or university<br />

may meet the VCCCD graduation requirements in effect at the time<br />

<strong>of</strong> his or her entering or at any time thereafter. This applies only to<br />

graduation requirements and not to policies, procedures, or other<br />

regulations.<br />

Catalog rights/continuous enrollment are defined as attendance<br />

in at least one term each calendar year. Any academic record<br />

symbol entered on a transcript (A through F, CR, NC, P, NP, I, IP,<br />

RD, W) shall constitute enrollment or attendance.<br />

A student who has not maintained continuous enrollment is<br />

considered to be under new requirements when returning unless the<br />

student is granted a petition/waiver for extenuating circumstances.<br />

This petition must be initiated by the student through a <strong>College</strong><br />

counselor and approved by the appropriate dean or designee.<br />

Students must be aware that other governing agencies may<br />

impose more restrictive limitations concerning the definitions <strong>of</strong><br />

continuous enrollment or continuous attendance. Some agencies<br />

define continuous enrollment as remaining in attendance both fall<br />

and spring semesters. Some will not accept selected academic<br />

record symbols (such as Ws). Those affected by more restrictive<br />

guidelines include students receiving financial aid and alien students.<br />

Double Counting<br />

While a course might satisfy more than one general education<br />

requirement, it may not be counted more than once for these<br />

purposes. A course may be used to satisfy both a general education<br />

requirement and a major or area <strong>of</strong> emphasis requirement.<br />

Variance in Major Requirements<br />

Occasionally a student may have difficulty in completing exact<br />

major requirements as specified in the <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Catalog due<br />

to circumstances <strong>of</strong> class scheduling conflicts, class cancellation,<br />

or related but nonequivalent coursework taken outside <strong>of</strong> this college<br />

district. Under such circumstances, a student may file a petition to<br />

seek approval from the appropriate college <strong>of</strong>ficials to substitute<br />

one or more courses for the designated major course or courses<br />

in question. It is also possible that a student may demonstrate<br />

competency in subject matter covered by a required course or<br />

courses (for example, computer literacy or foreign language). In<br />

this case, a student may file a petition to seek approval to waive<br />

one or more required courses for a designated major. The petition<br />

for this purpose, Petition for Variance, is available in the Counseling<br />

Office.<br />

Transfer Requirements<br />

The completion <strong>of</strong> general education and major requirements<br />

for an associate degree ordinarily does not make the student<br />

eligible to transfer to a four-year college or university. For transfer<br />

requirements, consult the transfer information section <strong>of</strong> this <strong>College</strong><br />

Catalog, appropriate websites, and your counselor.<br />
