CHEM V30 - CHEMISTRY FOR HEALTH SCIENCES - 4 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MATH V01 or MATH V01A-V01E or MATH 11B or MATH<br />
V30 or 1 year <strong>of</strong> high school beginning algebra with grade <strong>of</strong> C or<br />
better<br />
Hours: 4 lecture weekly<br />
This course is for biological and health science majors. <strong>General</strong>,<br />
organic and biological chemistry are studied with an emphasis placed<br />
on medical applications. Topics in general chemistry will include<br />
the modern view <strong>of</strong> the atom, molecules, chemical compounds, and<br />
reactions. Topics in organic chemistry will include hydrocarbons,<br />
alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones. Topics in biochemistry will include<br />
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and metabolism.<br />
Field trips may be required. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />
CHEM V30L - CHEMISTRY FOR HEALTH SCIENCES<br />
LABORATORY - 1 Unit<br />
Prerequisite: CHEM V30 or concurrent enrollment<br />
Hours: 3 laboratory weekly<br />
This course consists <strong>of</strong> laboratory investigations <strong>of</strong> general,<br />
organic and biological chemistry with an emphasis on medical<br />
applications. Experiments in general chemistry will include<br />
measuring densities, the separation <strong>of</strong> mixtures, and chemical<br />
reactions. Experiments in organic chemistry will include examining<br />
the properties <strong>of</strong> hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones.<br />
Experiments in biochemistry will include examining carbohydrates,<br />
proteins, and fats.<br />
Field trips may be required. Transfer credit: CSU; UC.<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />
Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />
required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />
not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers specialized study opportunities for students<br />
who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />
Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />
the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />

CHICANO STUDIES<br />
CHST V01 - INTRODUCTION TO CHICANO STUDIES - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course provides an interdisciplinary survey <strong>of</strong> the Mexican<br />
American/Chicano heritage with emphasis on the contemporary<br />
experience in the United States. The survey will include an analysis<br />
<strong>of</strong> the economic, political, social, and intellectual elements <strong>of</strong> the<br />
culture <strong>of</strong> the Mexican American/Chicano community, and a study <strong>of</strong><br />
the changing relationship <strong>of</strong> the community to the general society <strong>of</strong><br />
the United States.<br />
Field trips may be required. Formerly ChStd 1. Same as AES V20.<br />

CHST V02 - CHICANO STUDIES ISSUES - 3 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: AES V20 or CHST V01<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course will assess the similarities and differences <strong>of</strong> multiple<br />
cultures that have contributed to the Chicano experience. The<br />
examinations <strong>of</strong> Chicano studies will include historical perspectives<br />
and social science research principles and practices to analyze<br />
the impact <strong>of</strong> economic, political, cultural, social, and institutional<br />
factors which have shaped the Mexican/Chicano experience in the<br />
Southwest.<br />

CHST V24 - SOCIOLOGY OF THE CHICANO<br />
COMMUNITY - 3 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: AES V20 or CHST V01 or SOC V01<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course will examine various theoretical perspectives from a<br />
sociological framework in relation to the Chicano community. Race,<br />
class, gender and culture in the historical development <strong>of</strong> Chicano<br />
people will be explored as we discuss culture, ethnic identity, the<br />
institutions <strong>of</strong> education, economics, family and government. This<br />
will include an overview <strong>of</strong> past and current social movements<br />
(i.e. the Chicano, Chicana Feminism, labor movements and other<br />
topics). The course will analyze prevailing myths and stereotypes<br />
and investigate the ways Chicanos have contributed and participated<br />
in social and political change. Also, specific instances <strong>of</strong> Chicano<br />
structural resistance to Anglo encroachment and domination will<br />
be discussed. Particular attention will also be given to language<br />
development among Chicanos and the historical role <strong>of</strong> youth.<br />
