The Child Development program prepares students for an<br />

Associate in Science degree in Child Development or for completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> a Certificate <strong>of</strong> Achievement in Child Development. Students<br />

develop knowledge <strong>of</strong> the subject matter and skills needed for<br />

success in a variety <strong>of</strong> careers in child development, education, or<br />

social services.<br />

Successful completion <strong>of</strong> specific Child Development courses<br />

fulfills the Early Childhood (ECE) requirements for the California<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Social Services, Title 22 regulations, to work in<br />

licensed childcare settings. In addition, successful completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> specific Child Development courses fulfills the education<br />

requirements for a Child Development Permit. Permits are <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />

the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing at the following<br />

levels: Assistant, Associate Teacher, Teacher, Master Teacher, Site<br />

Supervisor, and Program Director. See the Child Development faculty<br />

for further information about Title 22 requirements or the Child<br />

Development permits.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

CD V01 - INTRODUCTION TO CAREERS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

EDUCATION - 1 Unit<br />

Hours: 1 lecture weekly<br />

This course focuses on the array <strong>of</strong> career options available to the<br />

child development major. <strong>General</strong> theories <strong>of</strong> career development,<br />

sources <strong>of</strong> career information, the Child Development Permit Matrix,<br />

and exploration <strong>of</strong> careers including teaching, counseling, working<br />

with children and families, and related matters will be covered.<br />

Field trips may be required.<br />

CD V02 - CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course examines the major developmental milestones<br />

<strong>of</strong> children, both typical and atypical, from conception through<br />

adolescence. Physical, psychosocial and cognitive development are<br />

studied with an emphasis on the interactions between maturational<br />

processes and environmental factors including language, culture,<br />

and diversity. Students will observe children, evaluate individual<br />

differences, and analyze characteristics <strong>of</strong> development at various<br />

stages while studying developmental theory and investigative<br />

research methodologies.<br />

Field trips may be required. Same as HEC V23. Transfer credit:<br />

CSU; UC; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />

CD V05 - TEACHING IN A DIVERSE SOCIETY - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course examines the development <strong>of</strong> social identities in<br />

diverse societies including theoretical and practical implications <strong>of</strong><br />

oppression and privilege as they apply to young children, families,<br />

programs, classrooms, and teaching. Various classroom strategies<br />

will be explored emphasizing culturally and linguistically appropriate<br />

anti-bias approaches supporting all children in becoming competent<br />

members <strong>of</strong> a diverse society. The course includes self-examination<br />

and reflection on issues related to social identity, stereotypes and<br />

bias, social and educational access, media and schooling.<br />

Field trips may be required. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />

CD V09 - FIELD WORK: CHILD DEVELOPMENT - 1 Unit<br />

Corequisite: current negative TB test report; and enrollment in one<br />

additional course in the discipline<br />

Hours: 3 laboratory weekly<br />

This course provides supervised laboratory and field experience<br />

for students interested in developing their skills <strong>of</strong> observation and<br />

working with children. Opportunities will be provided for students to<br />

work with various ages <strong>of</strong> children from infants through school-age<br />

in more than one type <strong>of</strong> setting. This course provides hours needed<br />

to meet the requirements <strong>of</strong> the California Child Development Permit.<br />

Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

times.<br />

CD V11 - LANGUAGE ARTS AND LITERACY EXPERIENCES FOR<br />

YOUNG CHILDREN - 1.5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: CD V02 or HEC V23 with grade <strong>of</strong> C or better; CD V62<br />

with grade <strong>of</strong> C or better; and current negative TB test report<br />

Hours: 1.5 lecture weekly<br />

This methods course includes advanced study <strong>of</strong> the academic<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> language arts and literacy as they are presented to young<br />

children. Specific areas covered include activities to develop oral<br />

language facility, writing (handwriting, spelling, functional and<br />

creative writing) and listening. Also, specific techniques dealing<br />

with diagnosis <strong>of</strong> language development will be addressed.<br />

Developmentally appropriate experiences, learning activities,<br />

materials and equipment are reviewed.<br />
