CD V62 - INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMS IN CHILD<br />
DEVELOPMENT AND CURRICULA - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: current negative TB test report<br />
Recommended preparation: CD V02 or HEC V23 or HEC V24 or PSY<br />
V05<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course includes a review <strong>of</strong> the historical roots <strong>of</strong> early<br />
childhood programs and the evolution <strong>of</strong> the practices promoting<br />
advocacy and pr<strong>of</strong>essional ethics. It examines the principles <strong>of</strong><br />
developmentally appropriate learning environments and constructive<br />
adult-child interactions. Students are introduced to teaching<br />
strategies based on a foundation <strong>of</strong> relationships and knowledge<br />
<strong>of</strong> child development that support physical, social, emotional, and<br />
cognitive development for all children.<br />

CD V63 - INTRODUCTION TO CURRICULUM IN CHILD<br />
DEVELOPMENT - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: current negative TB Test report<br />
Recommended preparation: CD V02 or HEC V23; and CD V62<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course presents an overview <strong>of</strong> knowledge and skills related<br />
to providing appropriate curriculum and environments for young<br />
children. Students will examine the early childhood teacher's role<br />
in supporting the learning and development <strong>of</strong> children from birth<br />
through age six with an emphasis on the essential role <strong>of</strong> play. The<br />
course also includes an overview <strong>of</strong> curriculum planning in content<br />
areas such as language and literacy, social and emotional learning,<br />
sensory learning, art and creativity, and math and science.<br />

CD V64A - PRACTICUM IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT:<br />
OBSERVATION AND ASSESSMENT - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: CD V02 or HEC V23; CD V62 and CD V63; and current<br />
negative TB test report<br />
Hours: 2.5 lecture, 1.5 laboratory weekly<br />
The course focuses on the appropriate use <strong>of</strong> assessment<br />
strategies to document children's development, play, and learning to<br />
join with families in promoting children's success and maintaining<br />
quality programs. Emphasis is on recording strategies, rating<br />
systems, and portfolios. Multiple assessment methods are explored<br />
to document and analyze children's behaviors. Observations <strong>of</strong><br />
children are completed at the <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Child Development<br />
Center or in a designated child development center through direct<br />
observation or equivalent multimedia.<br />

CD V64B - PRACTICUM IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT: FIELD<br />
EXPERIENCE - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: CD V64A; and current negative TB test report<br />
Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />
This course provides supervised experience in developing<br />
early childhood teaching competencies at the <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
Child Development Center or a designated child care center.<br />
Students will utilize classroom experiences to make connections<br />
between theory and practice, develop pr<strong>of</strong>essional behaviors,<br />
and build comprehensive understanding <strong>of</strong> children and families.<br />
Child-centered, play-oriented approaches to teaching, learning,<br />
assessment, and knowledge <strong>of</strong> curriculum content areas will be<br />
emphasized as student teachers design, implement and evaluate<br />
experiences that promote positive development and learning for all<br />
young children.<br />

CD V65 - ADMINISTRATION OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT<br />
PROGRAMS - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: CD V02 or HEC V23 with grade <strong>of</strong> C or better; CD V62<br />
with grade <strong>of</strong> C or better; and current negative TB test report<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course presents and assesses the principles and practices<br />
<strong>of</strong> child development administration. The areas covered include:<br />
program planning, organizational structure, budgeting, personnel,<br />
policies and practices, records, statistics, reporting, and<br />
relationships with community resources, regulatory agencies and<br />
parents.<br />

CD V88 - CHILD DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />
Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />
Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula.<br />
Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />
required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />
not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />
Fees may be required. Field trips may be required. <strong>Courses</strong> with<br />
same title may not be repeated; may be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times. Formerly CD V89.<br />
CD V90 - DIRECTED STUDIES IN CHILD<br />
DEVELOPMENT - 1-6 Units<br />
Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />
Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers specialized study opportunities for students<br />
who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />
Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />
the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />
Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times not to exceed 6 units. Formerly CD 90. Transfer credit: CSU.<br />
CD V95 - CHILD DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP I - 1-4 Units<br />
Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />
Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />
in one course in the discipline<br />
Hours: 60 per unit<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are volunteers (unpaid) an<br />
opportunity to obtain work experience related to their field <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
Students are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a designated<br />
faculty member in the discipline and the acceptance <strong>of</strong> an approved<br />
work proposal.<br />
Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other work<br />
experience/internship courses. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />
Transfer credit: CSU; credit limitations - see counselor.<br />
CD V96 - CHILD DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP II - 1-4 Units<br />
Corequisite: enrolled in a minimum <strong>of</strong> 7 units to include internship<br />
Recommended preparation: completion <strong>of</strong> or concurrent enrollment<br />
in one course in the discipline<br />
Hours: 75 per unit<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers students who are employed in the field an<br />
opportunity to expand their work experience related to their field<br />
<strong>of</strong> study. Students are accepted as a result <strong>of</strong> consultation with a<br />
designated faculty member in the discipline and the acceptance <strong>of</strong> an<br />
approved work proposal.<br />
Field trips will be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times not to exceed 16 units total in combination with any other work<br />
experience/internship courses. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />
