COGNITIVELY DIVERSE LEARNERS<br />
CDL V01 - PERSONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS FOR COGNITIVELY<br />
DIVERSE LEARNERS - 1.5-3 Units<br />
Hours: 3-6 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />
This course provides training in personal and social skills for<br />
students who have developmental disabilities and/or significant<br />
cognitive deficits. Through role-playing and class discussion,<br />
students will develop the skills necessary for responsible<br />
independence and enhanced quality <strong>of</strong> life. Topics will include<br />
developing healthy relationships, values and decision making,<br />
sexuality, health, and personal protection and safety.<br />
Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />
times. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for<br />
degree credit.<br />
CDL V03 - CONSUMER FINANCE FOR COGNITIVELY DIVERSE<br />
LEARNERS - 1.5-3 Units<br />
Hours: 1.5-3 lecture weekly<br />
This basic consumer finance course is designed for the student<br />
with significant cognitive deficits who is preparing for independent<br />
living and vocational training. Topics will include: concepts <strong>of</strong><br />
consumer finance; currency; shopping and responsible spending;<br />
banking; insurance; taxes; budget and expenses; and, consumer<br />
loans. Emphasis will be placed on the application <strong>of</strong> financial<br />
concepts in real-world situations.<br />
Field trips may be required. Offered on a pass/no pass basis only.<br />
Not applicable for degree credit.<br />
CDL V88 - COGNITIVELY DIVERSE LEARNERS<br />
WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />
Prerequisite: varies with topic<br />
Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />
Designed to meet specific needs <strong>of</strong> the college and community as<br />
required and/or requested by persons whose needs in this area are<br />
not met by present course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />
Fees may be required. <strong>Courses</strong> with same title may not be<br />
repeated: may be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4 times. Offered on a<br />
pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree credit.<br />
COMMUNICATION STUDIES<br />
COMM V01 - INTRODUCTION TO 2SPEECH<br />
COMMUNICATION - 3 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: ENGL V01A<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course will provide training and practice in effective oral<br />
communication through participation in public speaking, group<br />
discussion, and oral reading. The course will emphasize research,<br />
organization, language usage, efficient listening, and constructive<br />
evaluation.<br />

COMM V03 - GROUP COMMUNICATION - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
The course provides training and practice in the theory and<br />
principles <strong>of</strong> effective group discussion techniques. Emphasis will be<br />
on the examination <strong>of</strong> group behavioral theory and the testing <strong>of</strong> that<br />
theory with practical applications.<br />

COMM V04 - VOICE AND DICTION - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is designed to provide the student with a basic<br />
knowledge <strong>of</strong> voice production and the specific sounds <strong>of</strong> general<br />
American speech. Work will be done to improve breathing,<br />
projection, volume, tone, resonance, rate, and expressiveness.<br />
Each sound <strong>of</strong> general American speech will be covered through the<br />
Phonetic Alphabet so that students can perfect their pronunciations<br />
<strong>of</strong> American English for use in general conversation and in<br />
expressive reading. This course is recommended for those majoring<br />
in speech-communication, speech pathology, theatre arts, linguistics,<br />
and early childhood education, as well as ESL students.<br />

COMM V05 - ORAL INTERPRETATION AND COMMUNICATION<br />
OF LITERATURE - 3 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: ENGL V01A<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course introduces the principles and techniques <strong>of</strong> oral<br />
interpretation, analysis, and communication <strong>of</strong> literature. Students<br />
will apply the use <strong>of</strong> voice and body to convey meanings and<br />
nuances in literary works in all genres.<br />

COMM V10 - CRITICAL THINKING IN ORAL COMMUNICATION:<br />
ARGUMENTATION AND DEBATE - 3 Units<br />
Recommended preparation: ENGL V01A<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course will examine and practice critical thinking - both<br />
inductive and deductive - necessary for structuring arguments,<br />
stating and supporting opinions, and clarifying ideas. The course<br />
will provide training in listening for analysis <strong>of</strong> the reasoning <strong>of</strong><br />
other speakers and in identifying their evidence. Curricular and<br />
co-curricular debate will be the testing ground for the validity <strong>of</strong><br />
reasoning.<br />

COMM V13 - FORENSICS - 2 Units<br />
Prerequisite: COMM V01<br />
Recommended preparation: ENGL V01A<br />
Hours: 1 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />
This course provides training, rehearsal, performance and<br />
practicum necessary to a competitive speech team. It provides<br />
training in argumentation and debate, informative and persuasive<br />
speaking, oral interpretation <strong>of</strong> literature, along with impromptu and<br />
extemporaneous speaking. The course provides one-on-one training<br />
between student and instructor. Students are expected to participate<br />
in either interscholastic competition and/or speakers bureaus for<br />
various requesting community groups.<br />

COMM V15 - INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course examines interpersonal communication theories<br />
and processes including verbal and nonverbal channels, the role<br />
<strong>of</strong> self-concept in communication, assertiveness, listening styles,<br />
and conflict management. It provides skills practice in handling<br />
personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional communication situations. Individual<br />
and small group activities will be used to demonstrate principles <strong>of</strong><br />
interpersonal communication.<br />
