ENGL V136B - WOMEN IN LITERATURE II - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> the images, roles and identities <strong>of</strong> women<br />

through the study <strong>of</strong> the contribution <strong>of</strong> women to a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

literary genres including prose, poetry, short fiction, drama and<br />

novels. Authors will be studied in their historical, social and cultural<br />

milieu from the early 20th century to the present. Literary trends<br />

such as Modernism, Feminism, Men’s Studies, and Lesbian/Gay/<br />

Bisexual/Transgender Studies will also be covered. Emphasis is on<br />

appreciation rather than analysis. A student receiving credit in ENGL<br />

V136B will not receive credit in ENGL V36B.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly ENGL V132A. Offered on a<br />

pass/no pass basis only.<br />

LANGUAGE: LISTENING AND SPEAKING - 6 Units<br />

This course emphasizes the development <strong>of</strong> elementary<br />

listening and speaking skills that relate to everyday needs and<br />

situations. Students will focus on correct pronunciation and basic<br />

communication.<br />

Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree<br />

credit.<br />

ESL V01B - LOW-BEGINNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: READING AND VOCABULARY - 6 Units<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

This emphasis in this course will be the comprehension <strong>of</strong> short,<br />

simple sentences and building vocabulary. Reading activities will be<br />

interactive and engaging and will incorporate authentic materials,<br />

such as menus, calendars, and bus schedules.<br />

credit.<br />

ESL V01C - LOW-BEGINNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: WRITING AND GRAMMAR - 6 Units<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

In this course the emphasis will be on developing basic writing<br />

skills that will be immediately useful in beginning English language<br />

students' lives. Students will be introduced to spelling, punctuation,<br />

vocabulary development, and basic sentence structure.<br />

ESL V02A - HIGH-BEGINNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: LISTENING AND SPEAKING - 6 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ESL V01A or equivalent<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course will be on the development <strong>of</strong><br />

listening and speaking skills necessary for living and working where<br />

English is used. The focus will be on building vocabulary, with some<br />

attention to basic grammatical forms.<br />

Offered on a pass/no pass basis only. Not applicable for degree<br />

credit.<br />

ESL V02B - HIGH-BEGINNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: READING AND VOCABULARY - 6 Units<br />

Recommended preparation: ESL V01B or equivalent<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

In this course the emphasis will be on the development <strong>of</strong> basic<br />

reading skills to increase comprehension and build vocabulary.<br />

Authentic materials, such as ads, signs, schedules, forms, and traffic<br />

signs will be introduced.<br />

ESL V02C - HIGH-BEGINNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: WRITING AND GRAMMAR - 6 Units<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course will be on the development <strong>of</strong><br />

grammar and writing skills for the high-beginning English language<br />

learner. Students will focus on simple sentence patterns and the<br />

punctuation needed to write short notes and descriptions. They will<br />

also be introduced to basic question patterns needed for completing<br />

forms and applications.<br />

ESL V03A - LOW-INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: LISTENING AND SPEAKING - 6 Units<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

This course emphasizes the development <strong>of</strong> listening<br />

comprehension and oral communication. Students will begin to<br />

check themselves for grammatical accuracy in speaking, but will<br />

focus on fluency.<br />

ESL V03B - LOW-INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: READING AND VOCABULARY - 6 Units<br />

This course emphasizes the development <strong>of</strong> reading and<br />

vocabulary skills through the practice <strong>of</strong> strategies such as prereading,<br />

scanning for specific words, language use, or information<br />

and predicting meaning <strong>of</strong> new vocabulary.<br />

ESL V03C - LOW-INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: WRITING AND GRAMMAR - 6 Units<br />

Hours: 4 lecture, 6 laboratory weekly<br />

This course will emphasize the development <strong>of</strong> the grammar and<br />

writing skills that the low-intermediate English language learner<br />

can use to communicate in writing. The focus will be on sentence<br />

structure, questions, and verb tenses. Students will begin to write<br />

responses to questions in notes, and they will learn to write related<br />

sentences to form a simple paragraph.<br />

ESL V04A - HIGH-INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH AS A SECOND<br />

LANGUAGE: LISTENING AND SPEAKING - 6 Units<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course is on the development <strong>of</strong><br />

conversational fluency. Students will participate in face-to-face<br />

conversations on some topics beyond basic needs.<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> this course is on the developing reading skills<br />

and vocabulary study stills to facilitate comprehension and increase<br />

vocabulary. Students will learn to note key words and look for details<br />

that provide specific information on the topic at hand.<br />
