HED V73 - INTRODUCTION TO HOLISTIC HEALTH AND<br />
HEALING - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
Students will explore and examine global, cultural, ecological,<br />
scientific, spiritual, and historical influences upon humanity's<br />
perceptions and practices <strong>of</strong> health and healing. A comparison <strong>of</strong><br />
holistic traditions and therapeutic impacts will be analyzed and<br />
discussed. Topics will include: healing philosophies; homeopathic<br />
and allopathic approaches; healthcare systems; healing sources<br />
and systems; persuasion and intention; and, health practices <strong>of</strong> the<br />
future. Holistic healing processes involving the interconnectedness<br />
<strong>of</strong> mind, body and spirit will be emphasized.<br />

HED V76 - UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING<br />
STRESS - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course introduces the student to the physiology <strong>of</strong> the<br />
stress response and the return to homeostasis. Topics include:<br />
the symptoms <strong>of</strong> stress overload; stress burnout; the effects <strong>of</strong><br />
stress on the cardiovascular, immune, and digestive systems;<br />
and, the effects <strong>of</strong> chronic stress on a person's psychological<br />
health, including problems <strong>of</strong> sleep, concentration, and memory.<br />
Coping strategies including downshifting, time management,<br />
task prioritization, overcoming procrastination and developing<br />
psychological hardiness will be introduced. Stress reduction<br />
techniques including breathing exercises, mind-body forms, music<br />
therapy, mental imagery, physical activity, autogenics, mindfulness,<br />
progressive muscle relaxation, the relaxation response, and<br />
meditation will be explored.<br />

HED V84 - CPR FOR PROFESSIONAL RESCUERS - .5 Unit<br />
Hours: .5 lecture weekly<br />
This course provides the pr<strong>of</strong>essional rescuer with the knowledge<br />
and skills to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the<br />
consequences <strong>of</strong> respiratory and cardiac emergencies, and<br />
successfully perform the appropriate rescue techniques. Completion<br />
<strong>of</strong> this course will include an American Red Cross certification card<br />
for CPR for the pr<strong>of</strong>essional rescuer.<br />

HED V88 - HEALTH EDUCATION WORKSHOPS - .5-10 Units<br />

Hours: lecture and/or laboratory as required by unit formula<br />

This course <strong>of</strong>fers specialized study opportunities for students<br />
who wish to pursue projects not included in the regular curriculum.<br />
Students are accepted only by a written project proposal approved by<br />
the discipline prior to enrollment.<br />
Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 4<br />

HED V91 - SURVEY OF ALTERNATIVE AND INTEGRATIVE<br />
MEDICINE - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course introduces students to various alternative medicine<br />
modalities and health practices. Topics include: acupuncture,<br />
acupressure, herbal medicine, hypnosis, nutrition therapy,<br />
chiropractic, massage therapy, bi<strong>of</strong>eedback, homeopathy, ayurvedic<br />
medicine, detoxification, naturopathy, bio-energy, and exercise<br />
therapy. Students will learn to analyze and evaluate the efficacy<br />
<strong>of</strong> the alternative medicine practices and discuss how they can be<br />
integrated with allopathic medicine.<br />

HED V92 - FIRST AID, SAFETY AND CPR - 2 Units<br />
Hours: 2 lecture weekly<br />
This course covers prevention <strong>of</strong> accidents, procedures for<br />
treating wounds, shock, poisoning, fractures, athletic injuries<br />
and burns, and instruction in CPR and AED (Automated External<br />
Defibrillation). Students may qualify for the Standard American Red<br />
Cross First Aid Certificate, CPR community card, and AED certificate.<br />

HED V93 - HEALTH AND WELLNESS - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course introduces basic concepts <strong>of</strong> wellness including ways<br />
<strong>of</strong> achieving optimum health. Topics will include: concepts <strong>of</strong> health<br />
and wellness; stress management; psychosocial health; components<br />
<strong>of</strong> physical fitness; nutrition; weight management; relationships<br />
and sexual health; cancer, diabetes, and heart disease; substance<br />
abuse and addictive behavior; infectious diseases, including<br />
sexually transmitted infections; preventing violence and abuse; and,<br />
environmental health.<br />

HED V94 - THE TRAINER AND ATHLETIC INJURIES - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 2 lecture, 3 laboratory weekly<br />
This is an introductory course covering the care and prevention<br />
<strong>of</strong> athletic injuries. This course is designed to provide information<br />
and skill development in the proper treatment <strong>of</strong> these injuries.<br />
Topics include: historical developments in the field <strong>of</strong> athletic training<br />
and sports medicine, injury recognition, treatment modalities,<br />
evaluation techniques, rehabilitation, emergency situations, and the<br />
demonstration <strong>of</strong> taping and wrapping techniques.<br />
