ITAL V51B - SITUATIONAL CONVERSATION IN<br />

ITALIAN II - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL V02 or ITAL V51A or 3 years <strong>of</strong> high school Italian<br />

or equivalent<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is designed to give the intermediate-level student <strong>of</strong><br />

Italian additional oral practice in the language through conversation,<br />

discussion groups, role-playing, and other activities in Italian. The<br />

course will be conducted entirely in Italian.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly Ital 51B. Transfer credit:<br />

CSU.<br />

ITAL V80 - CONVERSATIONAL ITALIAN - 3 Units<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This is an entry-level course in oral communication in Italian<br />

that develops novice-level pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies in listening comprehension,<br />

oral expression, and vocabulary acquisition. Students imitate native<br />

pronunciation and intonation <strong>of</strong> Italian words and phrases through<br />

choral repetition, role playing, guided practice, responding in Italian<br />

to questions and commands, initiating conversations, conducting<br />

interviews in Italian, and by carrying out other communicative tasks<br />

used to facilitate language acquisition. Students develop the abilities<br />

to use Italian to conduct friendly conversations, gain information,<br />

and to discuss preferences, daily activities, and other basic<br />

conversational topics.<br />

JAPANESE<br />

JAPN V01 - ELEMENTARY JAPANESE I - 5 Units<br />

Hours: 5 lecture weekly<br />

This is an introductory course designed to provide the student<br />

with basic communication skills in Japanese. Emphasis is on<br />

listening, speaking, reading, and writing Japanese. Study <strong>of</strong> basic<br />

grammatical principles and proper Japanese pronunciation are<br />

also emphasized. Students are introduced to the use <strong>of</strong> Japanese<br />

characters. The history and culture <strong>of</strong> the Japanese people will be<br />

discussed. The language laboratory will be used to supplement<br />

classroom instruction.<br />

JAPN V02 - ELEMENTARY JAPANESE II - 5 Units<br />

Prerequisite: JAPN V01 or 2 years <strong>of</strong> high school Japanese or<br />

equivalent<br />

Hours: 5 lecture weekly<br />

This is the second course in the introductory sequence <strong>of</strong><br />

Japanese language study. Students will expand vocabulary and<br />

mastery <strong>of</strong> grammatical concepts as they acquire greater listening,<br />

speaking, reading, and writing skills in Japanese. The language<br />

laboratory will be used to supplement classroom instruction.<br />

Students will use more complex grammatical structures and a wider<br />

range <strong>of</strong> idiomatic expressions. Further study <strong>of</strong> Japanese history,<br />

culture and current events will be included in order to develop<br />

comprehension and speaking skills.<br />

JAPN V51A - SITUATIONAL CONVERSATION IN<br />

JAPANESE I - 3 Units<br />

Prerequisite: JAPN V01 or 2 years <strong>of</strong> high school Japanese or<br />

equivalent<br />

Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />

This course is designed to give the student with some knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> Japanese further opportunity to practice the language through<br />

conversation, discussion groups, role-playing, and other activities in<br />

Japanese. The course will be conducted entirely in Japanese.<br />

Field trips may be required. Formerly Japn 51A. Transfer credit:<br />

CSU.<br />
