MUS V02D - MUSIC THEORY IV: SIXTEENTH CENTURY<br />
COUNTERPOINT - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MUS V02B-V02BL<br />
Corequisite: MUS V02DL<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is an introduction to modal counterpoint. Topics will<br />
include: understanding the fundamental materials; implications <strong>of</strong><br />
Renaissance notational practice, modes, hexachord, and rhythm;<br />
aesthetics <strong>of</strong> 16th century melody; treatment <strong>of</strong> consonance and<br />
dissonance; species exercises in two or three parts using a cantus<br />
firmus; contrapuntal devices; canon; text setting; motet; madrigal;<br />
and, ricercare. Course requirements include written exercises,<br />
keyboard exercises, analysis, composition, and the study <strong>of</strong><br />
representative masterworks by Renaissance composers such as<br />
Orlando di Lasso.<br />

MUS V02DL - EAR TRAINING IV - 1 Unit<br />
Corequisite: MUS V02D<br />
Hours: 3 laboratory weekly<br />
This course provides advanced ear training in sight singing,<br />
dictation, and recognition <strong>of</strong> Gregorian plain chant melodies based<br />
on diatonic scales from the Middle Ages. Students will be introduced<br />
to techniques <strong>of</strong> modal counterpoint from the 14th through the 17th<br />
centuries.<br />

MUS V02E - MUSIC THEORY V: TWENTIETH CENTURY<br />
TECHNIQUES - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MUS V02B-V02BL<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is an introduction to compositional techniques <strong>of</strong><br />
the 20th century. Topics will include: modality, parallelism, pandiatonicism,<br />
polytonality, dissonant counterpoint, the twelve-tone<br />
method, serialism, aleatory techniques, minimalism, alternate<br />
forms <strong>of</strong> analysis, new instruments and notation, microtonality,<br />
and the rise <strong>of</strong> electronic music. Course requirements include<br />
written exercises, keyboard exercises, analysis, composition, and<br />
the study <strong>of</strong> representative masterworks by composers such as<br />
Bartok, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Debussy, Gershwin, Copland, Cage,<br />
Stockhausen, and Reich.<br />

MUS V02F - MUSIC THEORY VI: ELEMENTS OF TONAL MUSIC<br />
STRUCTURE - 3 Units<br />

This course is the study <strong>of</strong> form and tonal music. Topics will<br />
include: motive, phrase; period; melodic and rhythmic development;<br />
small forms; extended forms, such as dances, variation, rondo,<br />
sonata-allegro, concerto; and, structure as influenced by various<br />
performance mediums. Course requirements include written<br />
exercises, keyboard exercises, analysis, composition, and a study <strong>of</strong><br />
representative masterworks by composers from the 18th through the<br />
19th centuries.<br />

MUS V02G - MUSIC THEORY VII: EIGHTEENTH CENTURY<br />
COUNTERPOINT - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MUS V02C-V02CL<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is an introduction to tonal counterpoint. Topics will<br />
include: interaction <strong>of</strong> functional harmony, melody and tonality;<br />
exercises in two, three and four parts, using species, cantus firmus,<br />
canon and imitation techniques; contrapuntal devices; tonal and real<br />
answers; invention; fugue; noting the rise <strong>of</strong> instrumental music; and,<br />
the influence <strong>of</strong> the keyboard. Course requirements include written<br />
exercises, keyboard exercises, analysis, composition, and a study <strong>of</strong><br />
representative masterworks by composers from the 18th through the<br />
19th centuries, especially the music <strong>of</strong> J.S. Bach.<br />

MUS V02H - MUSIC THEORY VIII: JAZZ HARMONY AND<br />
PRACTICE - 3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MUS V02B-V02BL<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course is an introduction to concepts <strong>of</strong> harmony used in<br />
gospel, the blues, jazz, pop and rock. Topics will include: typical<br />
music groups; review <strong>of</strong> basic triads, seventh chords and chord<br />
symbols; improvisation; reading and creating performance charts;<br />
chord alterations; chord extensions; polychords; quartal chords;<br />
chord substitutions; modulation; world music influence; setting a<br />
melody; song writing; and, arranging. Course requirements include<br />
written exercises, keyboard exercises, performance, analysis,<br />
composition, and the study <strong>of</strong> important music from the gospel,<br />
blues, jazz, pop, and rock traditions.<br />

MUS V03 - INTRODUCTION TO WORLD MUSIC - 3 Units<br />
Hours: 3 lecture weekly<br />
This course provides an introductory survey <strong>of</strong> world music<br />
from the cultural traditions <strong>of</strong> the Americas, Africa, Asia, Indonesia,<br />
India and Europe. The course will focus on the cultural sources <strong>of</strong><br />
world musical practices, on characteristics <strong>of</strong> rhythm, melody and<br />
composition, and on musical instruments.<br />

MUS V04A - MUSIC COMPOSITION I - 2 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MUS V02A-V02AL<br />
Hours: 4 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />
This hands-on course where students will compose several works<br />
<strong>of</strong> music using traditional and modern compositional techniques.<br />
Students will produce a portfolio <strong>of</strong> works <strong>of</strong> high individuality and<br />
artistic caliber, and the successful completion and performance <strong>of</strong><br />
these works at a concert will be the basis for the student’s grade.<br />
The concert will be open to the public, and will take place at the end<br />
<strong>of</strong> the semester. More advanced students will be expected to write<br />
works <strong>of</strong> longer duration and a more challenging level.<br />
Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />

MUS V04B - MUSIC COMPOSITION II - 2 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MUS V02A-VO2AL; and MUS V04A or equivalent skills<br />
Hours: 4 lecture-laboratory weekly<br />
This course covers the major compositional techniques used in<br />
music since 1900. Students will produce a portfolio <strong>of</strong> original works<br />
by composing at least four pieces, utilizing techniques selected<br />
from the following: 12-tone, polytonality, minimalism, tone clusters,<br />
aleatory methods, primitivism, or the “new romanticism.” The<br />
completed works will be performed in a concert, open to the public,<br />
to take place at the end <strong>of</strong> the semester. More advanced students will<br />
be expected to write works <strong>of</strong> more challenging extent and for larger<br />
ensembles, including standard quartets and quintets.<br />
Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 2<br />
