PENSAMIENTO Y EDUCACIÓN EL FETICHE DE LA EDUCACIÓN PRIMARIA El problema de la educación es, —dice Dewey— que la sociedad vea claramente su propia condición y sus necesidades y se dedique a satisfacerlas. Si se obtiene ese reconocimiento, agrega, no dudaremos de la acción consecuente.

Ya hace algunos años se conmovió el mundo de la educación ante el ataque llevado contra la importancia que se daba en la enseñanza al estudio <strong>del</strong> griego. Pero, si el griego es realmente un fetiche, sus adoradores son pocos y su influencia escasa. Hay sin embargo en la educación un falso dios, cuyos idólatras forman legión, y cuyo culto influye en todo nuestro sistema educativo. En el estudio <strong>del</strong> lenguaje, no de las lenguas extranjeras, sino <strong>del</strong> idioma propio y no en la educación superior, sino en la primaria. Se admite casi sin disputa, tanto en la teoría como en la práctica de la educación, que deben ocuparse los tres primeros años de la vida escolar <strong>del</strong> niño a en enseñarle a leer y escribir en su propia lengua. Si añadimos a esto algunos cálculos numéricos tenemos el eje alrededor <strong>del</strong> cual gira la educación primaria. Se pueden enseñar otras materias, pero se las introduce en los programas en la más estricta subordinación. El mismo hecho de que se suponga que este procedimiento es inevitable como parte natural y establecida <strong>del</strong> proceso de la educación (toda imposición se toma como capciosa y revolucionaria), indica que, históricamente, hay buenas razones para que se asigne a esos estudios <strong>del</strong> puesto que ocupan. Pero no se deduce de ello que si alguna vez fue éste un procedimiento discreto lo siga siendo hoy. Por el contrario, el hecho de que esta forma de educación estuviese adaptada a condiciones pasadas es ya una razón para que no siga conservando el dominio supremo. El presente tiene sus derechos, y precisamente en la educación es donde estos derechos debieran dominar. Educar basándose en circunstancias pasadas es como adaptar un organismo a un ambiente que ya no existe. El individuo se embrutece si no llega a desintegrarse, y se detiene el curso <strong>del</strong> progreso. Mi tesis es que las condiciones (sociales, industriales e intelectuales) han cambiado de manera tan radical que se hace necesario un examen a fondo de la importancia que se da al trabajo lingüístico en la instrucción elemental. El estado actual <strong>del</strong> problema surgió en una época en que prácticamente el único camino para llegar al conocimiento era el saber leer, cuando la lectura era el único instrumento que permitía manejar las fuentes acumuladas de conocimiento de nuestra civilización. Los métodos científicos de observación, experimentación y ensayo eran desconocidos o estaban confinados a unos pocos especialistas en el extremo superior de la escala de la educación. Como estos métodos no eran libres, como no permitían nada que se asemejara a un uso general, no se podía permitir que el alumno empezase su carrera escolar en contacto directo con los materiales de la naturaleza y de la vida. La única garantía, el único criterio de valoración, se encontraba en las formas en que los grandes espíritus <strong>del</strong> pasado habían asimilado e interpretado esos materiales. Para evitar el caos y la confusión intelectual era necesario seguir reverentemente los pasos de los padres. Se necesitaba el régimen de la autoridad y de la tradición intelectual en asuntos políticos, morales y culturales, donde los métodos de investigación científica no se habían
