Baudrillards ’virtuelle krig’. Krigen er i gang.
Resume – English
The following section is a resume of our diploma thesis. The thesis is a comparative critical
discourse analysis of DR’s supplementary news broadcasts during the outbreak of the Gulf
war and the war in Iraq. The paper is divided into four major parts: theory, methodology,
analysis and contextualisation.
In the theoretical section we first present Michel Foucault, who we regard to be the father
of discourse analysis. We concentrate on those of Foucault’s works that are concerned with
power and surveillance. The section is particularly focused on the relationship between
discipline, knowledge and power, and the question of in how far these concepts influence
people’s everyday lives through social institutions. However, the section is also expressing
the presupposition that this thesis is based on. After the section on Foucault we are going to
introduce questions concerned with the media discussed by Paul Virilio and Jean
Baudrillard.
Paul Virilio is the second theorist the thesis is concerned with. Virilio’s thoughts about
dromology will be used to discuss tendencies indicated by the two DR broadcasts. In
Virilio’s concept of dromology the main concern is speed, which has to be understood in a
broad sense. Virilio focuses on the manner in which speed has influenced the military, the
urban and the political sphere. We position the section on Virilio against what we are calling
“the total war”, which is suggested by the DR broadcasts.
