However, the sample group represents
good practice in music education and allows
to systematically identify structural,
process orientated and product orientated
quality criteria. This in turn allows
for conclusions about the development
of music education to be drawn and international
comparisons to be made.
A contribution to qualitative evaluation
research
The results from the interviews conducted
for the study about quality definition,
music education approaches and basic
structural requirements provide a basis
for qualitative evaluation research in
music education.
Qualitative evaluation research is a
tool for evaluating the goals and the effectiveness
of projects. It can focus on
educational interventions, cultural innovations
or changes in the organisation.
The results can be used to improve planning
and decision-making and consequently
to improve the quality of the
projects. The aim of the study was to use
social research to gain better insight into
music education.
The approach taken was not to list
criteria or to establish a model with preset
rules to increase the quality of projects
and schemes for music education.
Instead, the approach was to identify
goal orientated success metrics through
communicating with education managers
and music educators. Their experiences
with particularly successful projects
as well as their attitudes, values,
challenges and goals take priority over
general indices.
Five successful projects documented
on the DVD
> The Royal Scottish National
Orchestra has established an
innovative scheme, which takes
place once a year: for one week
orchestral musicians are ‘rented
out’ to a Scottish region. In spring
2010, the musicians visited children’s
hospitals, old people’s
homes, youth centres and schools
in and around Aberdeen to develop
a musical as well as a personal
relationship with the general public.
> The musikFabrik and the
KölnerKinderUni accompany children
over the age of eight for half a
year on a challenging and hands-on
expedition into the secrets of electronic
sound, music sampling,
twelve-tone technique and the life
of Karlheinz Stockhausen.
> The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie
Bre men develops an intercultural
project for an entire
district. Based on the biggest
group of immigrants (Ghanaians),
it blends everyday culture with
contemporary African music,
adding plenty of rhythm and
movement.
> The Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg
offers concerts called ‘Mittendrin-
Kon zerte’, aimed at toddlers (age
0 to 2). They are followed by concerts
with added staging and
dramaturgy appropriate for older
children.
