to system<strong>at</strong>ically identify structural,<br />
process orient<strong>at</strong>ed and product orient<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
quality criteria. This in turn allows<br />
for conclusions about the development<br />
of music educ<strong>at</strong>ion to be drawn and intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
comparisons to be made.<br />
A contribution to qualit<strong>at</strong>ive evalu<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
research<br />
The results from the interviews conducted<br />
for the study about quality definition,<br />
music educ<strong>at</strong>ion approaches and basic<br />
structural requirements provide a basis<br />
for qualit<strong>at</strong>ive evalu<strong>at</strong>ion research in<br />
music educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Qualit<strong>at</strong>ive evalu<strong>at</strong>ion research is a<br />
tool for evalu<strong>at</strong>ing the goals and the effectiveness<br />
of projects. It can focus on<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>ional interventions, cultural innov<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
or changes in the organis<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
The results can be used to improve planning<br />
and decision-making and consequently<br />
to improve the quality of the<br />
projects. The aim of the study was to use<br />
social research to gain better insight into<br />
music educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
The approach taken was not to list<br />
criteria or to establish a model with preset<br />
rules to increase the quality of projects<br />
and schemes for music educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Instead, the approach was to identify<br />
goal orient<strong>at</strong>ed success metrics through<br />
communic<strong>at</strong>ing with educ<strong>at</strong>ion managers<br />
and music educ<strong>at</strong>ors. Their experiences<br />
with particularly successful projects<br />
as well as their <strong>at</strong>titudes, values,<br />
challenges and goals take priority over<br />
general indices.<br />
Five successful projects documented<br />
on the DVD<br />
> The Royal Scottish N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
Orchestra has established an<br />
innov<strong>at</strong>ive scheme, which takes<br />
place once a year: for one week<br />
orchestral musicians are ‘rented<br />
out’ to a Scottish region. In spring<br />
2010, the musicians visited children’s<br />
hospitals, old people’s<br />
homes, youth centres and schools<br />
in and around Aberdeen to develop<br />
a musical as well as a personal<br />
rel<strong>at</strong>ionship with the general public.<br />
> The <strong>musik</strong>Fabrik and the<br />
KölnerKinderUni accompany children<br />
over the age of eight for half a<br />
year on a challenging and hands-on<br />
expedition into the secrets of electronic<br />
sound, music sampling,<br />
twelve-tone technique and the life<br />
of Karlheinz Stockhausen.<br />
> The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie<br />
Bre men develops an intercultural<br />
project for an entire<br />
district. Based on the biggest<br />
group of immigrants (Ghanaians),<br />
it blends everyday culture with<br />
contemporary African music,<br />
adding plenty of rhythm and<br />
movement.<br />
> The Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg<br />
offers concerts called ‘Mittendrin-<br />
Kon zerte’, aimed <strong>at</strong> toddlers (age<br />
0 to 2). They are followed by concerts<br />
with added staging and<br />
dram<strong>at</strong>urgy appropri<strong>at</strong>e for older<br />
children.<br />
