Woven W wood fences s Turkey – Odunddan Örme Çitleer (Turkish) Wooden W fencess are an effective and relati ively cheap wway of conserv ving soil from water w erosion by decreasinng overland flow. They alsso increase crop c yield by encouraging beetter infiltratioon. Dry D croplands inn semi-arid reggions are gener rally subjected to intense soil erosion in hi illslopes due too sudden heavyy rainfalls. In th hese areas, conserving soil and a water by ch heap technologgies that could be installed by y the farmers wwith available re esources and kn nowledge becoomes important. Woven W wood fennces representt a technology applied and deemonstrated su uccessful in se emi-arid mounttainous dry crooplands in Eskişehir, central AAnatolia. They consist of wooden w posts 150 cm height inserted into the ground and bbranches wove en between th hese posts. Erooded soil from upslope becom mes trapped onn the upslope side s of the fe ence and overlaand flow is deccreased. The distance betweeen the fences is determined with w respect to ssoil texture andd field gradient. It is 30 m in hhillslopes of 10% % gradient co overed by sanddy loams in thee Eskişehir region. Classification Land use problems: The current dry cropland use requires the fields to be fallow every second year due to insufficient water in the soil. For this reason drought radically decreases crop yield. Owing to heavy rainfall, removal of both topsoil and subsoil occurs in places causing increased stoniness in the soil, which decreases its fertility and makes the tillage operations difficult.
