Th his technoloogy contribut tes towards preventing the occurrence and spread of large foorest fires and reducing th heir consequeences for the eenvironment, people, infrasstructures, etc c. There are three types of strip for fuel manag gement in foresst areas: prima ary, secondary an nd tertiary, deefined by the LLaw 17/2009. The most impportant differen nces between th hem are in termms of size (primmary being the widest and thee tertiary the narrowest) n and sc cale (primary referring to thhe district leve el, secondary to the munici ipal level and te ertiary to the pparish level). TThe primary st trip network syystem for fuel management (R RPFGC) is inteegrated in the National Syste em to Preventt and Protect Forest F against Fires and it is deefined by the NNational Forest Authority (AFNN). (Photo: João J Soares) The RPFGC aiims to re-arrange landscape e elements, through the est tablishment of di iscontinuities inn the vegetatioon cover, in forest areas andd in the rural landscape (for ex xample using water bodiess, agricultural land, pasture, , rocky outcro ops, shrubland an nd valuable forrest stands). The RPFFGC concept should s include th he adoption off a maintenannce programme. The implemmentation and maintenance op perations can be performed through diff ferent agro-forrest technolog gies, such as cl learance of buushes and treees, pruning, prescribed fire, hharrowing and d cultivation of th he ground beneeath the trees. Timber products can be soldd and the remo oved litter can be e used in a bioomass power pplant or applied d to the fields tto improve soil fertility, using mulching m technoology. This SWC Techhnology needs considerable financial resouurces in terms of labour and eq quipment at tthe implementation phase. Costs, howeever, undergo considerable re eduction thereaafter.
