in the <strong>for</strong>m of surface erosion by water) is severe in the areas with tree and shrub cropping and mixtures of land use types. The<br />

rate of land degradation is slowly decreasing in all degraded areas, but not changing in the areas with mixed land use types,<br />

although this area under conservation measures <strong>for</strong> more than 75%, and the effectiveness is reported as high. This may point<br />

at a time lag in the response of land degradation to the implementation of conservation measures. This is confirmed by the<br />

increasing trend of effectiveness reported <strong>for</strong> these areas. Only small parts of the severely degraded land with tree and shrub<br />

cropping are under conservation measures (
