17/2009. The most impportant<br />

differen nces between<br />

th hem are in termms<br />

of size (primmary<br />

being the widest and thee<br />

tertiary the narrowest) n and<br />

sc cale (primary referring to thhe<br />

district leve el, secondary to the munici ipal level and<br />

te ertiary to the pparish<br />

level). TThe<br />

primary st trip network syystem<br />

<strong>for</strong> fuel management<br />

(R RPFGC) is inteegrated<br />

in the National Syste em to Preventt<br />

and Protect Forest F against<br />

Fires<br />

and it is deefined<br />

by the NNational<br />

Forest Authority (AFNN).<br />

the vegetatioon<br />

cover, in <strong>for</strong>est<br />

areas andd<br />

in the rural landscape<br />

(<strong>for</strong><br />

ex xample using water bodiess,<br />

agricultural land, pasture, , rocky outcro ops, shrubland<br />

an nd valuable <strong>for</strong>rest<br />

tree cover shhould<br />

be less than t 50% of thhe<br />

area and th he base of the<br />

tree<br />

canopy shoould<br />

not be lowwer<br />

than 3 me etres. The RPFFGC<br />

concept should s include<br />

th he adoption off<br />

a maintenannce<br />

programme.<br />

The implemmentation<br />

and maintenance<br />

op perations can be per<strong>for</strong>med<br />

through diff ferent agro-<strong>for</strong>rest<br />

technolog gies, such as<br />

cl learance of buushes<br />

and treees,<br />

pruning, prescribed<br />

fire, hharrowing<br />

and d cultivation of<br />

th he ground beneeath<br />

the trees. Timber products<br />

can be soldd<br />

and the remo oved litter can<br />

be e used in a bioomass<br />

power pplant<br />

or applied d to the fields tto<br />

improve soil fertility, using<br />

mulching m technoology.<br />

This<br />

SWC Techhnology<br />

needs considerable financial resouurces<br />

in terms of labour and<br />

eq quipment at tthe<br />

implementation<br />

phase. Costs, howeever,<br />

undergo considerable<br />

re eduction thereaafter.<br />

The impplementation<br />

of f this infrastruccture<br />

to preven nt and protect<br />

th he land from foorest<br />

fire is entirely<br />

funded by y the governmeent<br />

and implem mented by the<br />

fo orest municipal services.<br />
