prospered <strong>in</strong> areas of the world that offered liberal trad<strong>in</strong>g arrangements<br />

for foreign shippers <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>essmen. They kept their operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

costs low by rely<strong>in</strong>g on European colonial powers—the Nether -<br />

l<strong>and</strong>s, Brita<strong>in</strong>, Spa<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> France—for naval protection <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure. The desire of the British to establish Hong<br />

Kong <strong>and</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore as new trad<strong>in</strong>g centres to rival the more established<br />

locations such as Canton, Manila, <strong>and</strong> Batavia, created ideal<br />

conditions for smaller Hamburg <strong>and</strong> Bremen firms such as Behn,<br />

Meyer, & Co. to establish headquarters <strong>and</strong> branch offices throughout<br />

a South-East Asian trad<strong>in</strong>g zone extend<strong>in</strong>g from British India, the<br />

Dutch East Indies, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, <strong>and</strong> the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es to Australia. Between<br />

1842 <strong>and</strong> 1856, one year before the f<strong>in</strong>ancial crash that temporarily<br />

crippled Hamburg’s overseas commercial networks, the number of<br />

Hamburg ships visit<strong>in</strong>g S<strong>in</strong>gapore rose from six to forty-five, an<br />

annual growth rate of more than 45 per cent. 62<br />

The total number of Hanseatic ships visit<strong>in</strong>g Hong Kong harbour<br />

was even more impressive, ris<strong>in</strong>g from 113 <strong>in</strong> 1860 to 416 <strong>in</strong> 1864. 63<br />

As neutral shippers fly<strong>in</strong>g the flags of the Hanseatic free cities, such<br />

companies operated successfully dur<strong>in</strong>g times of military unrest,<br />

deliver<strong>in</strong>g American cotton to Canton harbour dur<strong>in</strong>g the First Opium<br />

War, for example. Hamburg shippers operated a lucrative coastal bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

<strong>in</strong> trans-shipp<strong>in</strong>g goods to various East Asian harbours, offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ready cargo space to European as well as Asian merchants, <strong>and</strong> they<br />

participated <strong>in</strong> the movement of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>and</strong> other wage labourers to<br />

plantations <strong>in</strong> the Dutch East Indies, the Philip p<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>and</strong> the South<br />

Pacific. As much as three-quarters of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese coastal trade <strong>in</strong> the<br />

early 1860s, accord<strong>in</strong>g to one source, was transported on German<br />

ves sels, primarily on small, locally made vessels that were suited for<br />

coastal <strong>and</strong> medium distance trade. One hundred such ships regularly<br />

sailed between Hong Kong, Canton, <strong>and</strong> Shanghai on regular<br />

coastal circuits, leav<strong>in</strong>g the bulk of the oceanic commerce between<br />

East Asia, North America, <strong>and</strong> Europe <strong>in</strong> the h<strong>and</strong>s of larger, statesubsidized<br />

steamship l<strong>in</strong>es. 64 120<br />
