the centre of several communications str<strong>and</strong>s, from agents <strong>and</strong> masters.<br />

In the north-west port of Whitehaven <strong>in</strong> January 1850. William<br />

Dixon wrote to his agents <strong>in</strong> London:<br />

Gentlemen<br />

I am <strong>in</strong> receipt of your k<strong>in</strong>d favour of the 21 st respect<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Warlock.<br />

I am happy to say that I have letters from Capta<strong>in</strong> Pagen advis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his safe arrival at Batavia on the 8 th November hav<strong>in</strong>g had<br />

to leave Adelaide <strong>in</strong> ballast.<br />

He had chartered the Warlock to go to Sasnarang to board a<br />

cargo of sugar for Bombay <strong>and</strong> the Persian Gulf. To load a<br />

cargo there <strong>and</strong> at Bombay <strong>and</strong> return back to Batavia which<br />

will make a long voyage too much so I fear for the amount she<br />

receives to pay much more than keep her go<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

I will be much obliged if you would present the enclosed Bill<br />

for £120 on Messrs Row Prescott & Co. London for acceptance<br />

<strong>and</strong> return it afterwards<br />

His ship, while owned <strong>in</strong> Whitehaven, traded <strong>in</strong> the Far East <strong>and</strong><br />

brought its goods back <strong>in</strong>to Liverpool. 33 Earlier <strong>in</strong> the century, <strong>in</strong><br />

1816 from the t<strong>in</strong>y seaside village of Shaldon <strong>in</strong> south Devon,<br />

William Fox wrote a series of letters to brokers <strong>and</strong> agents <strong>in</strong> ports <strong>in</strong><br />

Liver pool, Irel<strong>and</strong>, Newfoundl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> Lisbon as he managed the<br />

pro gress of his ships, Three Williams, Neptune, Cognac, Good Intent,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Commerce</strong>. His relationships with Bulley & Co. <strong>in</strong> Liverpool,<br />

Richard Fogarty <strong>in</strong> Newfoundl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> John Leigh <strong>in</strong> Lisbon were<br />

well established <strong>and</strong> warm. At the same time he wrote a constant<br />

stream of letters to the masters of the three ships giv<strong>in</strong>g them clear<br />
