tured on an <strong>in</strong>ternational scale. Charters depended on the right<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> brokers, agents, owners, <strong>and</strong> masters worked with<strong>in</strong><br />

the system to keep their ships employed. This <strong>in</strong>volved considerable<br />

contact with other countries <strong>and</strong> cultures. The large ports such as<br />

London <strong>and</strong> Liverpool were major <strong>in</strong>ternational entrepôts <strong>and</strong> as<br />

such had wide contact with foreign ships <strong>and</strong> their crews. For centuries<br />

such ports have attracted other nationalities to settle there as<br />

local agents for their countries <strong>and</strong> many took up permanent residence.<br />

The smaller ports around the coast of Engl<strong>and</strong> also had similar<br />

contact <strong>and</strong> exposure to other cultures, albeit it on a different<br />

scale. A port did not have to be a major trad<strong>in</strong>g port to experience<br />

this, as this essay will show. Historians have rarely considered the<br />

situation of those people who rema<strong>in</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> the port community.<br />

While the mar<strong>in</strong>ers <strong>and</strong> master mar<strong>in</strong>ers travelled the world, their<br />

families, colleagues, <strong>and</strong> neighbours rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the port. These people<br />

were the shore-side support systems for the shipp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

<strong>and</strong> were closely <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>ternational networks.<br />

Those left beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> even the smallest of port communities had an<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational perspective through their exposure to foreign <strong>in</strong>fluences.<br />

Diaries, letters, <strong>and</strong> a range of other sources are brought<br />

together to exam<strong>in</strong>e the ways <strong>in</strong> which the port community was<br />

exposed to non-British cultures through these network contacts.<br />

The importance of networks <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation flow <strong>in</strong> the shipp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry is not a new topic. Yjro Kaukie<strong>in</strong>en explored the role of the<br />

n<strong>in</strong>eteenth-century F<strong>in</strong>nish master mar<strong>in</strong>ers who were the crucial<br />

<strong>in</strong>terface between the F<strong>in</strong>nish-speak<strong>in</strong>g owners <strong>and</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

English-speak<strong>in</strong>g world of merchant shipp<strong>in</strong>g. Their bus<strong>in</strong>ess relied<br />

heavily on foreign contacts, shipp<strong>in</strong>g agents, brokers, <strong>in</strong>surance<br />

firms, <strong>and</strong> bankers, from Hamburg to London <strong>and</strong> beyond. 3 The<br />

F<strong>in</strong>nish <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> the timber trade emphasized the importance<br />

to them of the British ports, <strong>and</strong> relationships with shipp<strong>in</strong>g agents<br />

<strong>and</strong> local consuls were established not just <strong>in</strong> London <strong>and</strong> Liverpool,<br />

but <strong>in</strong> many other smaller ports. The role of the shipbroker was an<br />

important one <strong>in</strong> match<strong>in</strong>g buyers <strong>and</strong> sellers of shipp<strong>in</strong>g services.<br />

Personal contacts <strong>and</strong> shipp<strong>in</strong>g knowledge were essential to match<br />
