<strong>in</strong>g trust, they are only hear<strong>in</strong>g the same <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> gossip<br />

repeatedly. They are not receiv<strong>in</strong>g new <strong>in</strong>formation or mak<strong>in</strong>g new<br />

contacts. What is needed for this to occur are weak ties, that is, people<br />

to whom an actor <strong>in</strong> a network is less tied, but who can offer new<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> opportunities, <strong>and</strong> can act as a ‘bridge’ <strong>in</strong>to other<br />

networks.<br />

There is much evidence that weak ties, <strong>and</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly those outside<br />

the family, were be<strong>in</strong>g used more <strong>and</strong> more <strong>in</strong> the eighteenth cen -<br />

tury. Rob<strong>in</strong> Pearson <strong>and</strong> David Richardson found that iterative bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

activity led to relationships that were predom<strong>in</strong>antly tradebased,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> which k<strong>in</strong>ship, religion, <strong>and</strong> ethnicity paid little part, or<br />

were at least less important. 22 Trevor Burnard also found that elite<br />

groups <strong>in</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong> borrowed from a wide range of people, <strong>and</strong><br />

though personal contact was desirable, those contacts did not have to<br />

be based on marriage ties. 23 Such iterative bus<strong>in</strong>ess activity could<br />

lead to ‘relational cohesion’, or a good feel<strong>in</strong>g based on past experience.<br />

24 Merchants would want to reproduce the good feel<strong>in</strong>g they<br />

experienced from a successful transaction <strong>and</strong> this could, <strong>in</strong> turn,<br />

promote gift-giv<strong>in</strong>g, loyalty to a relationship, <strong>and</strong> risk-tak<strong>in</strong>g together.<br />

This might happen even when actors had never met each other,<br />

such as when trad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Atlantic <strong>in</strong> the eighteenth century, <strong>in</strong> -<br />

volv<strong>in</strong>g large distances. By tak<strong>in</strong>g small risks at first, merchants<br />

could add new people to their network, or those with whom they<br />

only had weak ties, <strong>and</strong> once a successful transaction had taken<br />

place, the frequency <strong>and</strong> size of transaction would be <strong>in</strong>creased. 25<br />

Hancock found that networks <strong>in</strong> the Madeira trade were extended far<br />

beyond family ties, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g many people who never met personal-<br />
