The birth of the economic–political consular office <strong>in</strong> this context<br />

by no means directly co<strong>in</strong>cides with the early formation of the Iberian<br />

diaspora. In the first half of the sixteenth century, we note various<br />

Jewish experiments to adapt the orig<strong>in</strong>ally Christian, <strong>and</strong> specifically<br />

Venetian, office <strong>and</strong> title of consul. In the Balkans, for example, we<br />

can document Jews as consuls <strong>in</strong> the service of the Republic of<br />

Ragusa. Most Jewish consuls <strong>in</strong> the Balkans, however, were active <strong>in</strong><br />

a private capacity, offer<strong>in</strong>g their services to Christian as well as Jew -<br />

ish clients. In Ancona, on the other h<strong>and</strong>, the office of consul of the<br />

Levant<strong>in</strong>i was held by a Christian.<br />

It was not for this reason, however, that Ancona was to represent<br />

a turn<strong>in</strong>g-po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> Sephardic history <strong>and</strong> thus also for the further de -<br />

vel opment of the consular office among Mediterranean Jewry. Rather,<br />

it was the death of Jewish martyrs <strong>in</strong> Ancona that gave an im portant<br />

impetus to the emergence of a class of consuls that claimed to represent<br />

the Jewish nation <strong>in</strong> one place, or a local Jewish nation <strong>and</strong>, if the<br />

situation arose, its political <strong>in</strong>terests. This process took place, as I<br />

have tried to show, <strong>in</strong> a geographical space extend<strong>in</strong>g from the<br />

periphery of the area under Venetian economic <strong>in</strong>fluence to the very<br />

heart of the Serenissima itself. I have <strong>in</strong>dicated the separate stages of<br />

this development, <strong>in</strong> whose first decades the claim to representation<br />

was largely visible only <strong>in</strong> the designation ‘consoli degli ebrei’ <strong>and</strong><br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g which little is known about the exercise of the office. Thus <strong>in</strong><br />

the 1560s consuls designated ‘degli ebrei’ appeared on the scene <strong>in</strong><br />

Corfu. In the 1570s we f<strong>in</strong>d Jewish consuls lay<strong>in</strong>g claim to a comparable<br />

function on the Dalmatian coast <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Balkans. Sources<br />

grow more numerous <strong>in</strong> 1573, when the Venetian Doge <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple<br />

allowed the merchant Daniel Rodriga to use the title ‘Console della<br />

Natione Hebrea <strong>in</strong> questa città’. Rodriga’s assumption of the office<br />

was delayed by the power struggle with his mercantile colleague <strong>and</strong><br />

rival Hayyim Saruq. In the 1580s Saruq appeared to have been active<br />

as the de facto consul of the Levant<strong>in</strong>e Jews, 117 but <strong>in</strong> 1589 Rodriga<br />

ga<strong>in</strong>ed the upper h<strong>and</strong>. Borne up by his success <strong>in</strong> connection with<br />

the construction of a scala <strong>in</strong> Spalato, he seized the op portunity to be<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted ‘Console degli Hebrei Levant<strong>in</strong>i e Ponent<strong>in</strong>i’ by the Ven -<br />

etian Jewish community, an appo<strong>in</strong>tment that, as Aron di Leone<br />

Leoni tells us, the senate accepted ‘enthusiastically’. The settlement of<br />
