Hanseatic <strong>Networks</strong> <strong>in</strong> Tropical Markets<br />

The utility of the Hanseatic model of trade neutrality as a costeffective<br />

<strong>and</strong> flexible means of exploit<strong>in</strong>g economic opportunities <strong>in</strong><br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g global markets also provided dividends <strong>in</strong> sub-Saharan<br />

Africa, where merchant houses from both Hamburg <strong>and</strong> Bremen<br />

achieved modest successes <strong>in</strong> the 1850s <strong>and</strong> early 1860s. As was the<br />

case <strong>in</strong> the free trad<strong>in</strong>g zones of East Asia <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>determ<strong>in</strong>ate<br />

political climate of Polynesia, small Hanseatic firms <strong>and</strong> private vessels<br />

thrived <strong>in</strong> regional economies that provided a safe, accessible<br />

location for conduct<strong>in</strong>g commercial transactions where the costs of<br />

security <strong>and</strong> local <strong>in</strong>frastructure were borne by a comb<strong>in</strong>ation of outside<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous powers.<br />

In East Africa, the Hamburg firms Hans<strong>in</strong>g & Co. <strong>and</strong> William<br />

O’Swald & Co. relied upon both the regional authority of the Sultan<br />

of Zanzibar <strong>and</strong> the imperial <strong>in</strong>frastructure of the British Crown <strong>in</strong><br />

order to create private trad<strong>in</strong>g networks of their own. 65 Their regional<br />

networks of trad<strong>in</strong>g houses eventually radiated outwards from<br />

Zanzibar to reach parts of the Swahili coast at Mombasa, Entebbe,<br />

Dar-es-Salaam, <strong>and</strong> Bagamoyo as well as Mozambique <strong>and</strong> Mada -<br />

gas car. Both firms relied on British naval <strong>and</strong> diplomatic <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong><br />

the Mediterranean, Red Sea, <strong>and</strong> Indian Ocean to keep l<strong>in</strong>es of communication<br />

<strong>and</strong> transport open between Europe <strong>and</strong> colonial India.<br />

They imported British goods for sale to Zanzibar <strong>and</strong> exported ivory,<br />

copra, rubber, <strong>and</strong> spices directly <strong>in</strong>to British markets. Hans<strong>in</strong>g & Co.<br />

also conducted bus<strong>in</strong>ess with Bombay, shipped items on British postal<br />

steamers, <strong>and</strong> was <strong>in</strong>volved with British bank<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests on the<br />

isl<strong>and</strong>. In addition, the firm provided extensive f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>and</strong> commercial<br />

services to the Zanzibari government, underwrote state-run<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess enterprises, provisioned the sultan’s household with imported<br />

goods, purchased ships from Europe, <strong>and</strong> procured German capta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

<strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers for service <strong>in</strong> the sultan’s royal navy. 66<br />

In one prom<strong>in</strong>ent example of personal network<strong>in</strong>g between<br />

Hamburg firms <strong>and</strong> Zanzibari royal society, an agent for Hans<strong>in</strong>g &<br />

Co. named He<strong>in</strong>rich Ruete married a daughter of the late Sultan<br />

Seyyid Said <strong>and</strong> returned with her to Germany, where he died several<br />

years later. The widowed pr<strong>in</strong>cess, Emily Said-Ruete, would<br />

later publish a popular memoir of her experiences <strong>in</strong> Zanzibar <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
