purpose at the cost of providing Kramer with the use of monasteries
vacated under previous legislation and by levying higher tariffs on
competing imported cottons. 47 The profitability of the venture, so
aided, had attracted financial and entrepreneurial capital from
abroad, gaining for Lombardy the much sought after production of
cotton yarn.

Swiss merchant who had set up a mechanical spinning mill in Milan with a
German partner, as to which of them had first introduced mule jennys for
spinning warp thread in Milan. In the end, the Austrian government refused
to give the exclusive privilege to either, in view of their almost simultaneous
introduction of the new technology. Kramer’s mill was in any case considered
