indication: (1) (bot., prok.) of a name or rank, making clear which<br />

particular name or rank is being used (e.g. distinguishing between<br />

two homonyms by providing author citations, and using “subsp.”<br />

rather than “*”). (2) (zool.) a reference to previously published<br />

information, or a previous act, which in the absence of a definition<br />

or description allows names proposed before 1931, and that<br />

otherwise satisfy the relevant provisions of the Code, to be<br />

available. (3) (bot.) published information determining the typespecies<br />

of a generic name in the absence of an original designation<br />

(q.v.).<br />

indicative epithets: (bot., obsol.) infraspecific epithets that purport to<br />

indicate the taxon including the type of the next higher taxon (e.g.<br />

genuina, originalis, typica)<br />

indigen: (cult. pl.) a species believed to originate in a wild habitat.<br />

-idinae: (bot., unoff.) suffix proposed for names in the rank of supertribe.<br />

indirect reference: (bot.) a clear (if cryptic) indication, by an author<br />

citation or in some other way, that a previously and effectively<br />

published description or diagnosis applies; i.e. a reference other than<br />

by a complete or precise bibliographic citation.<br />

individual: (prok.) a term to be avoided as it may refer either to a single<br />

cell or to a strain.<br />

-inea: (phyt., obsol.) the suffix once used for terminating the name of a<br />

syntaxon in the rank of class; see -etea.<br />

-ineae: (prok., bot.): suffix added to the stem of a generic name to form a<br />

name at the rank of suborder.<br />

ined., [ineditus]: unpublished; appended to author citations to indicate that<br />

the name has not been published as required by the Code (e.g. a<br />

handwritten name on a specimen label, a name in a manuscript or<br />

work in press).<br />

informal: (prok., obsol.) of categories, those of section subsection, series<br />

and subseries not now permitted.<br />

informal name: a name not intended as a formal taxon name, such as a<br />

working designation while a taxonomic concept is being developed;
