135 The naming of organisms (and plant communities)<br />

nomenclatural filter: (unoff.) a flow diagram indicating the sequential<br />

steps necessary to arrive at the correct name of taxon under a Code.<br />

nomenclatural hierarchy: the consecutively subordinate ranks of taxa<br />

defined by a Code.<br />

nomenclatural novelties: new names and descriptions or diagnoses of new<br />

taxaor syntax.<br />

nomenclatural standard: (cult. pl.) a specimen or other device to which<br />

the name of a cultivar or Group is permanently attached.<br />

nomenclatural status: see status.<br />

nomenclatural synonym: a homotypic synonym (q.v.); an obligate<br />

synonym; (zool.) an objective synonym; see also heterotypic<br />

synonym, objective synonym, taxonomic synonym.<br />

nomenclatural type: (1) (bot., prok., zool.) the element to which the name<br />

of a taxon is permanently attached; this applies whether it is a<br />

correct name or a synonym; the nomenclatural type is not<br />

necessarily the most typical or representative element of a taxon; a<br />

name-bearing type (q.v.); see also cotype, epitype, holotype, isotype,<br />

lectotype, neotype, nominifer, onomatophore, paratype, syntype. (2)<br />

(phyt.) of a syntaxon, the element of the syntaxon to which the name<br />

of the syntaxon remains permanently attached; the nomenclatural<br />

type need not be the most typical (characteristic) or one that is<br />

outstanding owing to its particular frequency.<br />

nomenclature: (1) a system of names, and provisions for their formation<br />

and use; see also binominal nomenclature. (2) the system of names<br />

so produced, or any part thereof; the result of (1).<br />

Nomenclature Commission: (phyt.) see International Commission of<br />

Phytosociological Nomenclature.<br />

Nomenclature Section: (bot.) a body convened in accordance with the<br />

Code immediately prior to an International Botanical Congress;<br />

proposals to modify the Code are debated and voted, and decisions<br />

of Permanent Committees are ratified.<br />

Nomenclature Session: (mycol., prop.) proposed for a meeting convened<br />

on the occasion of an International Mycological Congress (IMC),<br />

the first to be held in 2010, to debate and vote on proposals relating
