Professor David L Hawksworth CBE is Chair of the IUBS/IUMS
International Committee on Bionomenclature (ICB), and an editor of
the last four editions of the International Code of Botanical
Nomenclature. He has positions in the Universidad Complutense de
Madrid and the Natural History Museum in London, is a former
President of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), an
Honorary President of the International Mycological Association
(IMA), was the last Director of the former International Mycological
Institute, and is Editor-in-Chief of Biodiversity and Conservation. His
research focuses on the systematics of fungi (including lichens) using
traditional and molecular phylogenetic approaches, but he is also
known for studies on the bioindication of air quality. He is author or
co-author of over 800 new scientific names, including 74 genera new to
science. Previous books include Coevolution and Systematics,
Improving the Stability of Names: Needs and Options, Ainsworth &
Bisby's Dictionary of the Fungi, Prospects in Systematics, and The
Changing Wildlife of Great Britain and Ireland. He was appointed
Commander of the British Empire by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1996
for services to science.
