-var.: (prok.) suffix used to indicate infrasubspecific rank, not regulated by<br />

the Code, e.g. pathovar, serovar; recommended for use instead of the<br />

suffix “-type”.<br />

variable spelling: see variant spelling.<br />

variant: (1) (cult. pl.) a plant or group of plants which shows some measure<br />

of difference from characteristics associated with a particular taxon.<br />

(2) (prok., unoff.) a culture not identical with the parent in all its<br />

characters, and also used for unnamed variation within a species.<br />

variant spelling: (zool.) different spellings of specific or subspecific names<br />

that are deemed to be identical for the purposes of the Principle of<br />

Homonymy (q.v.).<br />

varietal denomination: (cult. pl.) the name for a cultivar designated under<br />

the terminology of statutory plant registration authority; see also<br />

statutory epithet.<br />

varietas: a variety (q.v.).<br />

variety, [varietas, var.]: (1) (bot.), a category in the taxonomic hierarchy<br />

between that of subspecies and form. (2) (cult. pl.) used in some<br />

national and international legislation to denominate one clearly<br />

distinguishable taxonomic unit below the rank of species from<br />

others; generally, in such legislative texts, a term exactly equivalent<br />

to cultivar (q.v.). (3) (zool., obsol.) a term that if published after<br />

1960 is deemed to be of infrasubspecific rank, but that if published<br />

before 1961 is to be interpreted according to the Code as subspecific<br />

if the author used the rank of variety or form and did not expressly<br />

give it infrasubspecific rank. (4) (prok.), see –var.<br />
