hic designatus: designated here; used (especially in bot.) to make clear that<br />

a lectotype/ neotype/epitype is being selected by an author.<br />

hierarchy, [hierarchical system]: (1) a system of classification based on a<br />

sequence of categories ranked by their increasing levels of<br />

inclusiveness. (2) all the categories of taxa arranged in order<br />

according to their ranks.<br />

hipotype: see hypotype.<br />

historical synonyms: (prok.) synonyms not included in the Approved List,<br />

and generally placed in inverted commas (q.v.) when mentioned in<br />

lists of synonyms.<br />

hoaxotype: (1) (zool., unoff.) a fraudulently planted type intended to<br />

confuse others (!). (2) (zool., unoff.) a unique type constructed of<br />

parts of several unrelated higher taxa; see also ducotype.<br />

heterotype: (zool., unoff.) a type derived by combining the characters of<br />

two or more different species.<br />

holaedoeotype, [holaedotype, holaaedeotypus]: (zool., unoff.) an<br />

aedoeotype (q.v.), a preparation made from the holotype of a<br />

species.<br />

Holocene: the epoch that covers the last 10 000 years BP; recent.<br />

holocultype: (unoff.) the original strain of a microorganism cultivated by<br />

the author of the taxon, fully described and cited as type by the same<br />

taxonomist and maintained in culture without evident modification.<br />

holograph: (bot., obsol.) a handwritten document.<br />

holohomotype, [holohomoiotype]: a homoeotype of the same sex as the<br />

holotype or lectotype; see homotype.<br />

holomorph: (1) (prok., zool., unoff.) all the character states of an organism,<br />

i.e. including morphological and physiological ones; the whole<br />

organism. (2) (mycol.) a pleomorphic fungal species in all its<br />

morphs; i.e. including the teleomorph (q.v.) and one or more<br />

anamorphs (q.v.); see pleomorphic fungus.<br />
