partim, [part.]: partly, in part; (unoff.) sometimes used in citations to<br />

indicate names used partly in one sense; cfr pro parte.<br />

parvi-: (bot.) prefix used to signify a category of a rank between those<br />

denoted by the prefixes “infra-” and “super-”, e.g. parviclass,<br />

parviorder, parvisubkingdom.<br />

passim: here and there.<br />

pathotype: (1) (prok., obsol.) a pathovar (q.v.). (2) (vir.) in use in the sense<br />

of pathovar.<br />

pathovar, [pv.]: (prok.) a strain or set of strains with the same or similar<br />

characteristics, differentiated at infrasubspecific level from other<br />

strains of the same species or subspecies on the basis of distinctive<br />

pathogenicity to one or more plant hosts; a pathotype. The naming<br />

of pathovars of plants is subject to the International Standards for<br />

Naming Pathovars of Phytopathogenic Bacteria prepared by the<br />

Committee on the Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria of the<br />

International Society for Plant Pathology.<br />

patent name: (prok.) a name cited only in patent application; such names<br />

are treated as if not effectively published; see also plant patent.<br />

patronym: (not nomenclatural) the name of a person; see patronymic.<br />

patronymic: (1) of a name, one involving a patronymic prefix (e.g. Belgian<br />

“Van”, Dutch “van”, Irish “O”, Scottish “Mac”, “mc” and “M’”) or<br />

suffix (e.g. Russian “-vich”, Danish”-sen”, English Scandinavian”-<br />

son”); see also matronymic. (2) (unoff.) sometimes also used in the<br />

sense of an eponym (q.v.).<br />

patronymotype: (zool., unoff.) the type specimen of a new species in the<br />

personal collection of a collector who will donate it to an institution<br />

if the new species is named after him or her (!).<br />

per: (bot., obsol.) used in place of “ex” in author citations by some<br />

mycological authors when a pre-starting point name was being<br />

validated; see revalidated name, sanctioned name.<br />

perfect state: a teleomorph (q.v.).
