E-type: (zool., unoff.) a digital image of a holotype.<br />

-eae: (bot., prok.) suffix added to the stem of a generic name to form the<br />

name of a tribe.<br />

earlier: published prior to the date of another name or names under<br />

consideration.<br />

earlier homonym: (bot.) the earlier of two or more validly published<br />

homonyms; a senior homonym.<br />

earlier synonym: an older synonym.<br />

ecological niche: (1) (not nomenclatural) the space occupied by a species,<br />

including its physical space and function role; the biological space<br />

of a species conceptualized as a multidimensional hypervolume;<br />

incorrectly equated with microhabitat. (2) (vir.) the cellular<br />

environment of particular species or populations of host organisms.<br />

econ, [pl. eca]: (phyt., unoff.) a local vegetation unit.<br />

ecophenotype: a phenotype (q.v.) showing adaptations associated with the<br />

habitat or environment.<br />

ecotype, [oecotype]: (not nomenclatural) a group of populations within a<br />

species genetically adapted to a particular ecological niche;<br />

sometimes used preceded by an hyphen to indicate a particular<br />

category of ecotype, e.g. agro-ecotype, geo-ecotype; see also<br />

ecovar.: (bot., unoff., obsol.) proposed for use in the nomenclatural citation<br />

of an ecotype (q.v.).<br />

edition: the total number of identical copies of a work printed by the same<br />

method from one typesetting; a later edition is one created by the<br />

separate printing of the work, with or without any textual change;<br />

see also impression.<br />

Editorial Committee (prok., bot., cult. pl.): a body mandated to prepare the<br />

edition of the Code following the Congress at which it is appointed.
